the first prize of $5 for the best ad-
vertisements in the department’s idea
contest He submitted house advertise-
ments which contained a letter of
praise from a local department-store
manager for the success of a sale fol-
lowing advertising carried in the news-
paper Nease Ranks Second
Dale Nease ' Chickasha Daily Ex-
press received the second place award
of $3 for a series of 52 advertisements
run by a local flour mill The ads con-
tained quotations from 52 authorities
describing the value of flour
W R Rice Lawton Constitution
received third place for his series of
advertisements run by the chamber of
commerce in its annual drive for mem-
bership Honorable mention was given
the Ponca City News for a special auto
edition
Opening the conference discussions

at the University of Oklahoma an-
swered the question “Who pays for
advertising?”
Co-operation Is Urged
It is not the customer he said for
the customer benefits from the lowered
prices as a result of quantity produc-
tion caused by advertising and it is
not the merchant for he is enabled to
do a greater volume of business with-
out increased overhead
Ned Holman president of the Lib-
erty National bank Oklahoma City
declared that bankers should seek to
eliminate references to their personnel
in newspaper advertising
“The general public” he said “is not
interested in your services your capital
and all the other advantages your bank
has to offer Above all your advertis-
ing must be seen must be read must
be understood and last of all it must
be reliable” He suggested that co-operation
with local events such as fairs

State Papers Will Be

A complete directory of Oklahoma
newspapers will be published soon by
the Oklahoma Press association Ver-
non T Sanford secretary-manager
announced this week
The directory will contain the name
of the city where the newspaper is
published the county and the name of
the publisher Towns which are county
seats will be indicated by asterisks and
members of the Oklahoma Press asso-
ciation will be shown by boldface type
The directory will be published in
booklet form 31-2 by 81-2 inches in
size It will sell for $250
Collection of information for the di-
rectory is almost completed Sanford

Change in Libel Laws
The proposed house bill to revamp
the' Oklahoma libel law to put the burd-
en of proof on publishers accused in
libel actions was approved by a house
committee February 26
The bill was introduced in the house
of representatives February 12 by H

It provides that when a published
statement is proved untrue malice is
presumed and it is up to the publisher
to prove no damage has resulted

O Ferguson and Robert H Breeden
publishers of the Cleveland American
became the new owners of the Vinita
Daily Star March 1 They purchased
the newspaper from Mr and Mrs A
H Bertram who have owned and op-
erated it since 1897
In another newspaper deal completed
March 1 Clarence Paden editor of the
Woodward Daily Press became city
editor and part owner of the Henryetta
News
Gaffaney to Be Editor
Gaffaney a graduate of Vinita high
school and Oklahoma A and M col-
lege Stillwater will be in charge of
the plant of the Vinita Daily Star
which will be moved to a new location
Gaffaney formerly was a reporter on
the Muskogee Phoenix and for the
past year has been employed as adver-
tising manager of the Craig County
Democrat Vinita He resigned from
this position about two weeks ago
Breeden and Ferguson have owned
and edited the Cleveland American
since 1931 Ferguson formerly pub-
lished the Pawnee Courier-Dispatch
and Breeden formerly was advertising
manager of the Hobart Democrat-Chief
Tryon Editors Change
Paden has been editor of the Wood-
ward Daily Press for the past ten
years He has been connected with the
Frederick Leader Ponca City News
and Osage Chief at Fairfax and was
part owner of the Ellis County News
Shattuck from 1929 to 1931
Mrs M B O’Bleness became editor
of the Lincoln County Leader Tryon
last week succeeding M L O’Bleness
who has been editor-publisher for sev-
eral years O’Bleness resigned to take
a position with another state newspa-
per the name of which was not an-
nounced by the Leader
Mrs O’Bleness will be assisted in
the publication of the Leader by her
daughter Miss Annabel! O’Bleness and
a son M W O’Bleness owner of the
Carney Citizen
NEWSPAPERMEN SUBPENAED
BY GRAND JURY AT TULSA
Five Tulsa newspapermen were sub-
penaed March 3 by a grand jury which
is investigating alleged gambling and
liquor conditions in Tulsa county
Those who served as witnesses be-
fore the jury are Harmon Phillips Bob
Foresman and Hugh V Haddock of
the Tulsa Tribune and Nelson Taylor
and Alvin Duvall of the Tulsa World
