Future Will Depend on Volume Of
Advertising and Circulation
Jackson Writes
Altho its publishers announced that
they do not think there is a field for a
morning daily in Seminole the Semi-
nole Morning Star an 8-page paper
appeared November 1
In a front-page column “This and
That” James T Jackson editor of the
Star and its companion paper the Pro-
ducer stated that the Producer Pub-
lishing company had decided to give
the morning daily a “good fair trial” -“The
future of the paper will depend
upon the volume of advertising and
circulation it can command” he pre-
dicted Louis Blackburn is in charge of news
for the Star assisted by Tom Olmstead
Members of the Producer staff also will
assist when needed The advertising de-
partment is under the direction of the
regular Producer staff — “Mule” Gilli-
land and Foy Dacus — and Jack Old-
ham a new employe Producer em-
ployes did the mechanical work on the
first issue
The Star will be published five
mornings Tuesday to Saturday inclu-
sive “One favorable thing at least can
be said for the new venture” wrote
Jackson “The slack has been taken
up in the newspaper line and all avail-
able competent newspaper hands are
working”

J Meyerson to Speak
To Journalism Students
J I Meyerson advertising manager
of the Daily Oklahoman and Okla-
homa City Times will address students
and faculty members of the school of
journalism at the University of Okla-
homa next Thursday in the seventh of
the journalism lecture series
He will talk on “Newspaper Adver-
tising in 1950” After his lecture he will
be interviewed by Dudley Tichenor
Oklahoma City journalism student
over WNAD campus radio station on
“To What Extent Does Advertising
Increase the Cost of Merchandise to
the Consumer?”
Mrs Walter Ferguson Tulsa col-
umnist for Scripps-Howard papers
is scheduled to talk on “Writing and
Syndicating a Column” on November
22 Hazel Lee Guthrie president of
Theta Sigma Phi women’s journalistic
fraternity will interview Mrs Fergu-
son over the radio on “How and Why
I Write a Column”
The Clinton -Morning Times re-
ceived the contract for printing general
election ballots in Custer county

Get New Positions As
A P Bureau Expands
Expansion within the Associated
Press organization has brought about
a number of changes affecting Okla-
homa City newspapermen according
to Leon H Durst manager of the
state bureau of the A P
Jack Stinnett former reporter and
theater critic on the staff of the Daily
Oklahoman has joined the New York
City staff of the A P as business
feature writer John Jameson former
city editor of the Muskogee Times-
Democrat and for the last several
months a reporter on the Daily Okla-
homan has joined the staff of the state
A-P bureau in Oklahoma City Hugh
Wagnon formerly in charge of sports
for the state bureau has been made day
news editor replacing Fred Vander-
schmidt who recently was transferred
to the New York City staff
Lillard McGee of the Topeka Capi-
tal staff has replaced Wagnon and the
scope of the sports department of the
bureau has been extended Francis

Best News Stories Of
1934 Are Being Chosen
In order to secure a wide selection
of the state’s best news stories of the
last year the help of managing editors
of Oklahoma papers and press asso-
ciation men has been asked by H H
Herbert director of the school of jour-
nalism University of Oklahoma
Preparations are being made for
publication of “News Stories of 1934”
a successor to the first volume of out-
standing news stories which appeared
last spring covering 1933
Dr Frank L Mott University of
Iowa is in charge of the book and
Herbert will submit to him a group of
stories from Oklahoma papers
The deadline for the book is Decem-
ber 15 It is expected to be ready for
distribution next March
Harrison Is on Program
Of Kansas “ Roundtable i9
Walter M Harrison managing editor
of the Daily Oklahoman and Oklahoma
City Times will be one of the guest
speakers at the annual newspaper
“roundtables” conducted by the jour-
nalism department of the University
of Kansas November 16 and 17
Harrison spoke at this event in 1928
the year he was president of the
American Society of Newspaper Edi-
tors CHESTER KEYES OF JONES
ELECTED TO LEGISLATURE
A newcomer in the next legislature
will be Chester A Keyes editor of the
Oklahoma County News Jones and
other county papers Keyes was elected
to represent the sixth district in Ok-
lahoma county’s delegation in the
house

An address by Dr W B Bizzell
president of the University of Okla-
homa and the Oklahoma-Kansas Ag-
gie football game as well as business
discussions are on the program for
the joint meeting of Groups 4 and 10
of the Oklahoma Press association in
Norman next Saturday
Newspapermen from nine counties in
Group 4 and eight counties in Group
10 will meet at 10 o’clock Saturday
morning in 210 Union building on the
university campus
Herbert to Give Welcome
The program as announced this

Transcript publisher and chairman of
Group 10 includes an address of wel-
come by H H Herbert director of
the university school of journalism an
address by N G Henthorne Tulsa
World president of the press associa-
tion a report on activities of the asso-
ciation’s central office by Vernon T
Sanford secretary-manager and a talk
on “Some Revenue-Producing Ideas”
by John H Casey professor of jour-
nalism at the university
Ira Tonkinson business manager of
the Anadarko Daily News has been
asked to speak on “Building Rural Cir-
culation” Nichols May Speak
Doctor Bizzell will speak at a lunch-
eon L M Nichols Bristow Record
has been asked to discuss “Recent
Code Developments” at the luncheon
program and round-table discussion
will follow The meeting will adjourn
in time for the football game at 2:30

Defeats EPIC Candidate
Frank F Merriam republican gover-
nor of California who defeated Upton
Sinclair EPIC democrat by approxi-
mately 170000 votes in the guberna-
torial race Tuesday is a former Okla-
homa newspaperman
He came to Oklahoma from Iowa in
1903 and became associated with Bert
Greer on the old Muskogee Times as
business manager The following year
he purchased an interest with Col
Clarence B Douglas in the Muskogee
Phoenix where he again served as
business manager In 1910 he moved
to California In 1930 he was elected
lieutenant governor and became gover-
nor when James Rolph jr died
