To 1956 Freshmen
On behalf of the Oklahoma Daily we wish to extend
a hearty welcome to you and to congratulate you on choos-
ing OU You will not regret your choice we know for
OU has ever) thing a prospective student could desire of
a university
It has an efficient and forward-looking administration
headed bv a sincere down-to-earth president who always
tries to keep in mind that the university exists primarily
for the students
It has a spacious well-kept campus and many modem
well-equipped buildings with more going up constantly
It offers a wide range of social and cultural activities
which is practically all-inclusive It has an extensive sports
program both intercollegiate and intramural
Most important of all it has a fine faculty which in-
cludes many men who rank high nationally in their field
No matter what your planned field of study we believe
you can get no better training anywhere in the southwest
From actors to zoologists OU turns out some of the finest
in the nation
College for many of vou‘ will be a new kind of ex-
perience For the first time you will treated as adults
and expected to act like adults You will be “on your own”
to a greater extent than ever before
Your four years at OU can be the most profitable and
tire most enjoyable of your life-or they can be just four
wasted years It is up to each one of you to make the most
of the opportunity that college offers Because you will be
your own boss you must learn early to discipline yourself
You must learn to budget your time so that you can take
part in the activities wliich are an important part of college
life and still have plenty of time for study
You probably have thousands of questions about OU
and about college life in general The purpose of this
special edition of the Daily is to try to answer some of those
questions for you and to give you some idea of what to
expect when you come to Norman next month
We are looking forward to seeing you then

Letter to a Freshman
By MACK PALMER
Dear Jim
When you arrive at OU next fall this letter will be waiting My
time will have been served (as we cynical seniors like to say) nml
the only hint of my 4-year stay will be insignificant statistics in a1
large filing cabinet
It w'ould he foolish of me to attempt to offer much advice in till
letter Not only because of my inability but even more so liocause a-
yet you nerd hone For-tlie next low days you are going to sec OU
with its best foot forward to greet you The whirl of rush and then
enrolment procedure won't leave you time for loneliness It wili
come later And for aw'hilc before the academic routine sets in you
may Justifiably think this is truly a “party school”
Enjoy these first days to the fullest Jim Tlirn get down to bnsi
ness I envy you I envy the four wonderful years you are beginning'
You wont use them to full advantage because you're like myself and
others of the fla-s of 36 and all the other classes on rumpuses every-
where The years will scatter away so quickly and your regret will
come like pain The many things you didnt do will face you The books'
you never read The questions you never asked That indefinable some-1
thing you fame here to get and was here but that you'll leave without
All this sounds like gobblrdgook to you now It wont in four
years i
Listen Just a minute more and then you can get back to more'
Inviting activities Many things you've never faced before will soon '
confront you You're going to encounter students with dark skin ora
eves that aren't shaped like yours Don't be handicapjicd by the noiw
sense of intolerance Jim These students have much to offer and youy
can benefit from their presence Just as they can from yours
Don't view these years as a picnic nr ns drudgery You're going)
to have wonderful times You'll thrill watching n great football team
and knowing that It's your team You'll delight in good natured argu- i
nient You'll likely go through the incomparable experience of love'
But there will lie the disappointments and heartbreak that approach-
ing maturity requires Yon may lose that girl You may have to admit
that your plans ure beyond your capabilities Swallow your pride if
this happens and pledge yourself to do that which you ran do best
and with greatest satisfaction
Finally Jim this last thing Realize that a little learning can
be more dangerous than none at all As you acquire new knowledge
and your breadth of understanding ox i wilds don't lie hindered by
conceit Approach learning with humility and realize that all you
learn is only evidence of how very much more there is to know
Jim enjoy Soonerland Cheer the Ulg Kcd on hot autumn after-
noons Visit the library occasionally Make each day count because’
though it sounds ridiculous they'll lie gone in just a little while Then'
some spring evening four years from iuiw' as you si rol I across thei
oval and realize you won't hear the union clock chime many more I
times rememlicr this letter You'll understand then
Now head for that dance and watch out for Saturday classes
Your erudite buddy
