African Americans
Gave Nation Jazz:
Original Art Form !
For some strange reason, Europeans and persons not of
African descent seem to-appreciate jazz more than the de-
scendants of those who originated it. To be sure there are
great jazz musicians who are not African Americans. But the
music has its roots in Africa.
Jazz music, originally spelled jass, was started and nur-
tured by blacks long before it became "acceptable" in polite
society In fact, jazz was originally thought to be an art-form
that could not become a part of white American culture.
Today, we hear over and over again that jazz is America s
only original art form with everything else coming from Eu-
rope or elsewhere in the world.
April was Jazz Appreciation Month, and we almost let
that observance slip by without a word So it s May now, but I
jazz is alive and well XM Satellite Radio celebrated the en-
tire month, and paid tribute to Duke Ellington all day on
April 29
There have been many great jazz musicians, and some ot
them have come from Tulsa and other parts of Oklahoma It
was the late Charlie Christian, an Oklahoman, who brought
the guitar into the music. Of course, there were the giants
who contributed to jazz from across the nation.
We are concerned that many of our young people seem
to have little or no appreciation for jazz music Many have
no awareness for names such as Duke Ellington, Count Basie,
Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Miles Davis, to mention
just a few All of these giants of jazz have passed away But
there are new ones making their contributions today. Trum-
peter Wynton Marsalis, for example, comes to mind
Marsalis comes from a musical family, led by his father
pianist Ellis Marsalis. His brother, Branford, plays a mean
tenor saxophone and formerly led the "Tonight Show band
for Jav Leno. Other brothers in the family are musicians
It is the responsibility of older African Americans to in-
troduce jazz music to our young people We are not con-
vinced that the generation gap should create a void in the
appreciation of fine music ,
This is a call for more support of jazz music, Amenta s
original art form If you listen up, we think you will like
what you hear The music has evolved, passing through var-
ious forms, over the years including Dixieland, Ragtime,
Swing, Bebop, Modem Jazz, Fusion, and it list goes on If

30 Years Since the End
Of Vietnam War, and
Controversy Continues
April 30 marked the 30th anniversary of the end of the
Vietnam War, a battle that claimed the lives of more than
58,000 Americans. The war ended but the controversy sur-
rounding it still lives on today.
The Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C.,
was designed to make no political statement, writes Carol Pe-
terson for Voice of Ameica. "It does not glorify the war, nor
does it glorify a particular battle. Instead as Maya Lm, its de-
signer, said it is a memorial...for those who have died, and
for us to remember them. "•
The memorial was dedicated in 1982. Since it was dedi-
cated people have left behind simple messages scrawled on
scraps of paper, typewritten letters, photos, flowers and

retary of defense during a period of the fighting, admitted
years later that the Vietnam War was a mistake

C On January 20, 1969, when Richard Nixon became the
fifth U S President in 20 years to confront the question of
American involvement in Vietnam, there were 540,000 Amer-
ican troops in Vietnam sent by Presidents Kennedy and John-
son. There were more than 325 men being held as prisoners
of war. Americans were sharply divided over our purpose
and our presence in Vietnam
Harry Truman was the first American President to com-
mit the United States to aiding Vietnam by sending military
advisors there in 1950, while Vietnam was still under French
colonial control. This reflected an American commitment to
preventing Communist domination of Vietnam
President Eisenhower continued that commitment
However, in 1954, with the French withdrawal, the formula
changed. Vietnam was partitioned, with the North falling
the control of Vietnamese nationalists and anti-Communists.

In the 30 years since the end of the Vietnam War, the
countrv is still healing over many aspects of the battle.
The nation is now engaged in yet another controversial
war, and again lives are being lost on both sides.
It would seem that lessons should have been learned in
Vietnam that should have kept us out of Iraq.
The United States cannot be policeman for the world
There will always be dictators or policies somewhere that are
contrary to our way of thinking. The mistakes of the past
seem to be repeated over and over again.
Some Americans blamed the returning servicemen for
the War in Vietnam, which was a mistake They were only
carrying out the orders coming out of Washington.
The Vietnam War was still being waged in the last elec-
tion campaign with questions being raised about President
Bush s dutv in the Texas National Guard, and attacks against
AWN. Not even, apparently,
