performance in Canton, Ohio.
Earlier that afternoon, the
O’Jays were honored at a
lavish luncheon attended by
scores of leading record in-
dustry executives from
across the country. Kenny
Gamble and Leon Huff, the
Philadelphia International
recording artist, the O’Jays
have announced the
celebration of the twentieth
year in the music industry
with a major cross country
tour.

Another highlight of the
luncheon was the reading of
the scores of congratulatory
letters from such honored
people as Governor James A.
Rhodes of Ohio, Mayor Ralph
J Perks of Cleveland (their
hometown), and United State
Senator, Howard M. Met-
zenbaum of Ohio. Richard
Mack, Vice President of
Markets Promotions, CBS
Records presented the O’Jays
with a plaque in recognition
of theirtwentielh an-
niversary.
To coincide with the lour,
Philadelphia International
Records has released the
O’Jays new album entitled
“Traveling At The Speed Of
Thought," which already is
traveling impressively up the
major music charts.
The O’Jays prepared a
totally new (250,000 concert
lour production for the 75-dty
concert tour.

In the first day of his new
job as a playground super-
visor, an ex-Marine sergeant
discovers that teenage kids
aren’t as easily outwitted as
his former recruits. Ned
Beatty stars as Nick Szysz-
nky, the ex-sergeant with the
impossible name, on
"Szysznyk," a new comedy
series which debuts Monday,
August 1 (7:30-8:00 PM) on
the CBS Television Network.
Peter Bonerz directed the
first episode from a script by
Jim Mulligan and Ron
Landry.
With the high hopes of the
district supervisor, Ms.
Harrison, that Szysznyk will
be able to save the Northeast
Community Center from the
wrecking crew by making it a
successful project, Szysznyk
runs up against its youthful
Detroit, Philadelphia.
Cleveland. Newark. Chicago,
Atlanta, Los Angeles,
Memphis, and Washington.
DC. Philadelphia Inter-
national recording artists, in
addition to contributing their
talent to rec' i ding the single
and the album, are scheduled
toappear in each of the ten
cities selected “donating
their time and effort to make
the campaign an outstanding
success."
Toward the end of the drive
each city will compete for the
"National Clean Up The
Ghetto Urban Renaissance
Award," with represen-
tatives from the winning city
being flown to Philadelphia
and to New York, for
meetings and dinner with
officials from both
Philadelphia International
and CBS Records.
"Philadelphia
national Records will reserve
one hundred percent of its net
profit from the "Lei’s Clean
Up The Ghetto” campaign to
fund future community
development programs,"
said Harold Preston,
program coordinator and
director of community af-
fairs al Philadelphia
Internationa) Records “Our
aim is two-pronged. We hope
to physically restore parts of
the ghetto in each city, and
make then liveable again for
the people in each com-
munity. Beyond that, we
hope to create some kind of
incentive that will prompt
community leaders and in-
dividuals to prolong our drive
by creating similar programs
throughout the year, while
becoming more conscious of
the needs that exist to clean
up the ghetto.”

summer-long “Let’s Clean
Up The Ghetto" campaign in
ten selected cities. The an-
nouncement was made by
Kenny Gamble, chairman of
lhe board of Philadelphia
International Records and
lhe originator of the cam-
paign.
The drive will be kicked off
lhe last week of June with the
release of a "Let’s Clean Up
The Ghetto" album to include
a single recorded by six of lhe
label’s major artists - U>u
Rawls, The O’Jays, Dee Dee
Sharp Gamble, Teddy
Pendergrass, Archie Bell,
and Billy Paul. This album
will also include songs
recorded by former
Philadelphia International
recording acts - Harold
Melvin and the Blue Noles,
The Three Degrees, as well as
P.l.R. artists, The Intruders
Both the single and the album
will be released on
Philadelphia International
Records and tapes.
125,000 donation has been
set aside by Philadelphia
International Records toward
lhe creation and im-
l amentation of the cam-
paign, with CBS Records
committing, a similar
amount, In making the an-
nouncement officers from
both companies stressed their
total commitment to the
drive, and to what they view
as a significant social con-
tribution to each community
involved.
Target cities for this year’s
campaign - the first of its
kind conducted with such
magnitude by any record
company - are New York,
