VINITA — An Eaatern State Hospital aide aaya
he told a Craig County grand jury of allegations of
groan neglect of patients at the state mental facil-
ity.
The grand jury was called qfter Jerry Straw,
who has worked at the facility periodically since
J954. obtained 206 names on a petition requesting
an investigation of the hospital.
' Straw. 45. testified before the panel and later
told repot tore he “told them (the jury) conditions
Were deteriorating and we couldn't get any help
from the mental health |M*ople or the governor's
office.'*
Straw said he told the jury about a lack of pa-,
tienl care, maladministration and the danger
poaed by some unruly patients Io the hospital's

"A lot of them (patients) were so poorly dressed
that they could not stand the cold," Straw said.

Her attorney says the
mixup could mean an
estimated $3,000 annu-
al pay hike for Miss
Summerfield.

The 32-year-old Miss
Summerfield works as
a recreation district su-
pervisor. She applied
for the court adminis-
trators's job in Febru-
ary after former court
clerk Ron Young was
appointed to the City
Commission.
Although she has no
court experience, she
has a degree in polltl-

technical remarks, said American
maintenance crews removed both
the engine and Its supporting pylon
as a unit, rather than separately as
instructed.
Then, in order to reattach the en-
gine to the wing, the maintenance
men had to force the bolting mecha-
nism to fit. thus causing a bend in
the engine mounting structure and
eventually a crack, he said.

out of order without telling his su-
pervisor
Michael Marx, an NTSB metah
expert, said the method of removing
the engine and pylon described by
Robinson caused a crack in the su-
port structure. Such a crack caused
the port engine of the DC-10 that
crashed at Chicago to fall away on
takeoff.

"We asked hospital officials to send a bus for
these patients, but they refused without any expla-
nation."
Straw, who is now training to become a special
psychiatric aide, also alleged there have been
more than 100 "accidents'* In the first three
months of the year, most of which stemmed from
workers trying to restrain patlenta.
"With about 600 patients here, we have around
300 women workers compared to only 90 men." he
said.
He said only about 150 staff members are on
duty at any one time.
"Conditions arc as bad as I have ever seen them
here." he said.
The hospital aide said he urged the gtSnd jury
to subpoena nearly a dozen other people, includ-
ing some hospital administrators.
He said five or six people are "now running the
place" because the psychiatric Institution has not
had a superintendent since February.

lines mechanics and an inspector to
testify further on how American's
wide-bodied DC-10* were main-

Monday addressed that issue.
Robinson, who worked on the
doomed DC-10 during its last main-
tenance check at a Tulsa facility in
March, said he and other mechanics
did not follow exactly the sequence
of steps in a work order issued by

$200,000 from the estate of the late George Hall
has been received by the McAlester Scottish Rile
Consistory's Charitable and Educational fund for
financing college students and helping aphasia
victims.
The bequest will create new scholarships, which

The grant is the second major contribution
within the past year. The other was bequeathed
from a trust by Mrs. Eleanor Lilka and was re-
ported at between $700,000 and $800,000.
