rise in this blue-ribbon gun sport
little Prentiss was calmly breaking
targets in the national preliminary
handicap event a 100 target affair

Polio Will Star
In Radio Series
Starting Sunday
OKLAHOMA CITY Aug 1 — W—
A series of public information
broadcasts on polio will start Sun-
day in an effort to halt spread of
the disease
Inauguration of the series to be
offered free to radio stations in
Oklahoma for the next six weeks
was announced today by Dr Grady
F Mathews state health commis-
sioner Qualified doctors will conduct a
question and answer program each
week he said'
The list of victims climbed to
498 for the year Monday with 312
currently in hospitals There have
been- 38 deaths in 1949
A year ago there were 118 cases
and 13 deaths
Dr Mathews declined to say
polio had reached the epidemic
stage which would mean a total
of 500 cases in the state He said
although the state is now at that
level nearly 200 had been released
from hospitals and sent home
Some local areas however have
been in an epidemic stage for the
past 30 days he added
Oklahoma City school officials
said there would be no delay in
opening the schools August £9 un-
less the polio wave Increased

tary chiefs reported a satisfactory
preliminary exchange of views
Monday on how to fit Italy into
western Europe’s defenses under
the North Atlantic treaty
Italy’s army and navy chiefs of
staff conferred for 75 minutes with
the United States joint chiefs of
staff in the tightly guarded war
room of Frankfurt’s headquarters
building '
No details were disclosed but
there were some indications the
opening talks revolved In part
around Italy's naval position in the
Mediterranean

' MAYSVILLE Aug 1 — (P) — A gas-
oline explosion and fire at a load-
ing dock here early Monday re-
sulted in the death of one worker
and brought minor injuries to two
other persons
The worker W R Pugh Pauls
Veliev died in a Pauls Valley
hospital of burns a few hours after
the accident
Mr and Mrs D C Carroll Mavs-
vllie were treated for burns suf-
fered when their home caught fire
asked Marshall advised no “You're
trying to start the engine up” the
former secretary of state said
Representative Javits (R-NY)
told Marshall he plans an amend-
ment requiring President Truman
to reach agreements with signers of
the Atlantic treaty that there be
a unified command in defense of
western Europe and other unifica-
tion steps
Marshall advised Javits that such
a requirement “may lead us into
something we're not anxious for

Before seeing the Italians the
Americans met with senior officers
of the Luxembourg armed forces
These were the first of scheduled
meetings by the joint chiefs with
military leaders of the Atlantic
pact nations They will move on to
London Paris and Vienna later
this week for further conferences
from the flaming gasoline
Witnesses said apparently the
gasoline caught fire and exploded
as 12 tank cars were being filled
at the loading dock
The tank cars were damaged by
the fire but quick work by firemen
from Lindsay Pauls Valley and
Maysville prevented gasoline 'in the
cars from igniting

uates Gene Levy instructor received
his BA 1r 1937 and his MA In 1948
For the past two years he has
been head of the department of
mathematics at the College of the
Ozarks Clarksville Ark From 1937
to 1942 he was instructor at Sal-
lisaw high school From 19-12 to
194G he was a meteorologist with
the army air force and in 1948
and 1947 instructor in mathematics

year h was a graduate assistant
in electrical engineering here
He attended Princeton univer-
sity from 1937 to 1939 was an ab-
stracter for a year and did sur-

work in photo-topography meteor-
ology and fighter direction

assistant received his BA in edu-
cation In January of this year and
since then has been a graduate as-
sistant in mathematics He attend-

one of two Negro men deputized

to raid a gambling game in Taft

Oscar Lowe 43 negro was shot
to death in the raid
Muldrow was held without bond
on the charge No date was set
for preliminary hearing
