PHILADELPHIA June 17— (AV-What’s behind the Philadel-
phia Athletics’ current drive toward the top of the American
League?
Just look at the A’s batting order and the first name — Joost ss
Eddie is a little guy who claims he weighs all of 165 pounds
But hour he’s throwing that weight around!
’ He socked his 15th home run of the season Thursday That
tied him with Vern Stephens for the American League lead and
put him one up on Ted Williams
That swat came off Hal Newhouser of Detroit the major’s
premier lefthander and was Joost’s third home run off Newhouser
this year '?
Eddie has crossed home plate more often than any other player
In the major leagues has driven In more than 30 runs although
he’s the leadoff man and continues to play the best brand of
defensive shortstop in the league"
His batting average of 320 is the third highest in the league
That’ll tall ball playing for a little guy who never before has
batted 300 and who looks frail at the plate
Hank Greenberg the Cleveland Indians’ vice president who
used to be a pretty fair home run- hitter himself had this to say
about Joost the other day:
i '“Eddie's not physically equipped for home run hitting But he
has wonderful wrist action” - i l t
Connie Mack the canny old manager of the A’s rescued Joost
from Rochester in 1047 Eddie hit only 207 that season but climbed
to'J50 a year ago- r
WhereEddiewill go from here no one knows But it’s a good
bet that if he keeps up his sizzling ’49 pace the A’s will be a very
serious pennant threat'- : i
