Inside Facts on Utilities
Discovered by Reporter
By Jane 'Wilson
Wednesday I went to see Walter W Kraft superintend-
ent of university utilities He’s the man who is so hard to
1000
find After being ushered into his office at the stroke of 1 101S
2 p m (the clock chimed as I walked in) I sat down and in jio:4"
my best journalistic style asked him about the grandfather
clock in the comer
With a mplle he told me the”

Finally recalling that I came to
find out about the utilities on the
cpipus I- asked him about- them
Here is what I found out:
tat of people take the heat-

where they come from
ipopreyrr if for 24 hoars these
facilities were taraed ' off we’d

Few people know' that the uni-
only once
years has the power been turn-
ed off This is a better record
than most cities can boast of
Kraft said
The -one Interruption occurred
when the switchboard needed re-
pairs and the current was turned
off for an hour Before this hap-
pened however all buildings on
the campus were notified in case
notified incase
an experiment was being made
that might have been destroyed
by the interruption
Oar electric wires are all In
tanarls -underground thusellm-
Jnating the danger of broken
wires during storms
Our water supply Is critical
at the present time Before the
war the university had three
wells in operation They aver-
aged 300 gallons per minnte an
amount so large that only two
wells were needed the year j
around— the third need only j
daring the summer
When the naval air technical
training center and the naval air
station were -built In 1942 numer-
ous wells were drilled at each
base lowering the water level in
this whole area The number two
well on the campus went dry and
the remaining two decreased un-
til it became necessary to make
up the deficiency from the Nor-
man supply Kraft added
Due to the shortage the uni-
versity was unable to water the
grounds last summer The wa-
ter level will rise again within
two years when these new
wells are removed Kraft con-mi-n
teil Cost la guerre!
As far as the heat goes there is
no automatic control for each
building but a man is in the pow-
er plant constantly day and night
who suiervises rough control on
steam pressure This conserves
tael
Rooms on the south are always
warmer than those on the north
Kraft explained so the heat is
usually turned iff on that side
