Postwar Program Debated
Since the beginning of the accelerated war program of
education throughout the country there has been some specu-
lation as to its merits during peacetime Many educators be-
lieve that after the war we should continue to crowd four
years of college education into 32 months and thus give men
an earlier part in industry and business Again it would give
those who wish to do graduate work a chance to go further be-
fore having to start work This would produce according to
those who advocate the accelerated program a greater num
lxr of men and women with higher degrees '
To decide such a question howver it is first necessary
to review the effect of our present speed-up program Has it
at Tech for example promoted the cause of technical educa-
tion or has it resulted in an indifference to studies and a re-
lang of interest? f ‘
r Tech began the war-time program in the spring of ’42
-Ix'ing one of the first schools in die country to do iso Or ad-
ministration foresaw the responsibilities it had to shoulder and
took immediate steps to prepare for' the change Until sum-
mer came though the change was unnoticeableV But when it
came it was apparent not only to the facility' but also to the’
students! V

Interest dropped and with the drop in interest appeared
a new restlessness among students The Tech s high standards
iiatuiidlv helped to forestall a dangerous let-down at this time
hut grades were dropping Speculation had it that school
would “pick up” with winter and that studying would resume
its previous tempo
Such was not the case Probably it might have been if
-studi nts had Ittch given a definite status in regard to the draft
Months' of confusion followed until the ERG was called and
the Navv announced its program this spring
At last things could return to normal But they didn”t The
students who were still here liad been in school since Septem-
ber 1941 and were sick of books “Back to normal” was an
impossibility Under army and navy influences the service-
men at Tech arc doing some studying Our civilians had one ! 5:00 — Selections from act

But we are far from that degree of efficiency in studying that
once prevailed at Tech
