A I'JORB TO THE TAXPAYERS OR THE
CAPITAL QOESTIOH
It is ths duty of •very taxpayer to vote intelligently on the Capital question, and
to that end, OKLAHOMA CITY invites the fullest investigation of her claims.
We contend that Oklahoma City HAS CARRIED OUT HER CONTRACT with
the State just as far as CONDITIONS, over which she had no control, WOULD
PERMIT.
We have placed with GOVERNOR CRUCE $xoo,000.00, IN CASH, and deeds to
SIX HUNDRED FIFTY ACRES OF LAND, to be delivered to the State, with
which to ERECT A STATE CAPITOL.
There can certainly be no controversy as to the value of the money itself, since it
was accepted by three Oklahoma banks as good and lawful money of the United
States; and is now drawing interest.
The VALUE of the lands was originally determined, by three appraisers AP-
POINTED BY GOVERNOR HASKELL, to be $1,400,000.00. Since that time, some
two hundred acres of land could not be delivered because of defective title, and other
lands were substituted with the APPROVAL OF GOVERNOR CRUCE, after these
substituted lands had been appraised by THREE DISINTERESTED appraisers AP-
POINTED BY JOHN R. WILLIAMS, of the SCHOOL LAND DEPARTMENT.
Of the donated lands, ONE HUNDRED FIFTY-SEVEN ACRES LIE SOUTH
OF TWENTY-THIRD STREET, or practically BETWEEN the CAPITOL SITE
and THE CITY*. Lands adjoining these are now selling at from $750 to $1250 per lot.
At this rate the ONE HUNDRED FIFTY-SEVEN ACRES would bring from $900,-
000.00 to $1,500,000.00.
Now the additional lands are worth not po much as the close-in lends, but st a
REASONABLE ESTIMATE, they are worth from $250,000.00 to $500,000.00. So in
either event the STATE GETS MORE THAN THE MILLION DOLLARS, besides
the $100,000.00 already in cash.
The fake map, circulated by Guthrie throughout the State, is ABSOLUTELY
INACCURATE, and IS A FRAUD UPON ITS FACE. It gives, for inatance, a
negro post office, within the donated lands, named Smithville, which DOES NOT
and NEVER DID exist in Oklahoma County. Other inaccuracies as to distance are
equally glaring, and show a studied effort to mislead and deceive, by LEAVING OUT
ALL RAILROADS. INTERURBAN AND STREET CAR LINES, PARKS, BOU-
LEVARDS, and the city boundary lines.
No citiaen of the State has ever examined the lands, who did not say that they
would bring MORE THAN A MILLION DOLLARS, as soon as the ACTUAL
CONSTRUCTION of the Capitol was assured.
As to the titlee, no objection was ever made to any of the lands, except the
Howe-Parker tract, and THIS HAS RECENTLY BEEN SETTLED BY THE U. S.
CIRCUIT COURT OF APPEALS. The other objections were purely technical, and
were easily corrected.
We INVITE EVERY TAXPAYER in the STATE to EXAMINE the SITE, the
LANDS, and the TITLES, and then determine for himself whether with his AL-
READY HEAVY TAXES, he wants the State to DECLINE A GIFT OF $1,500,000.-
00 from Oklahoma City, and SADDLE this ENORMOUS EXPENSE upon the State
—JUST TO PLEASE GUTHRIE.
The expense to which GUTHRIE has ALREADY PUT THE STATE, in
FORCING this ELECTION upon the PEOPLE WOULD PAY SEVERAL YEARS'
RENTS
IS Oil PROPOSITION FAIR TO TNE TAXPAYERS?
