At least four urologists agreed to J
do it, but all later backed off.
The operation involves ftmoval of
the testicles from the scrotal sac.
The prostate tubes also are re-
moved.
Woodworth said it depresses but
does not kill the libido. -Castrated
men can take part in heterosexual
intercourse and reach sexual cli-
max, he said.
But he said the operation often has
side effects, inducing an emotional ,
upset in men similar to menopause
in women. •

attorneys in criticizing urologists
who refused the castration requests.
"A whole branch of the medical
profession has been unwilling to ex-
tend a humanitarian service to this
man, who faces the prospect of
being locked in a qige for the rest of
his years." he said of Kenner.
"Several (doctors) have told me
privately that they would like to ac-
commodate the men, but they're
afraid they might be exposed to
some crank lawsuit. I regard these
fears as fanciful, but there's no way
of guaranteeing a doctor that some
nut won't sue him."
Kenner and De La Haye, both 45-
year-old laborers, have spent the
last year together in San Diego
County Jail, waiting for a surgeon to
volunteer to perform the operation,
called a bilateral orchidectomy.
SAN DIEGO (AP/ — Jwq .convict-
ed sex offenders who asked to be
castrated rather than put behind
bars have been sent to prison for in-
definite terms because they could
not find a surgeon willing to perform
the operations.
"I had no choice," Superior
Judge Douglas R. Woodworth said
Tuesday after sentencing Joseph
Alonzo Kenner and Paul De La
Haye. He said he passed sentence
, "with personal regret."
"I could have granted them proba-
tion under some kind of chemothera-
py or psychotherapy program," he
said. "But those programs require a
measure of self-discipline. Sorry as I
am for them, I just couldn't justify
the risks."____
