, By Mary Jo Nelson
A group of mothers will
tell a legislative council
committee next week that
their children's textbooks
are full of violence, pro-
fanity and conflict.
A joint committee head-
ed by Rep. Charles Elder
(D-Purcell) will conduct
hearings on the textbook
complaints Tuesday in the
house chambers.
Dlst. Atty. Curtis P.
Harris said he had been in-
vited to appear before the
group, but declined be-
cause he will be prosecut-
ing a murder case Tues-
day.
"They've got a good
cause," Harris declared,
referring to the objecting
mothers.
A spokesman for the
group, Mrs. Barbara Rich-
ards, said junior high
school books are particu-
larly objectionable. She
said the protestors, an un-
organized group of moth-
ers, object to stories deal-
ing with extreme cruelty
to animals, violence, tor-
ture and violent death, use
of profanity and disrespect.
for authority.
"It's the whole general
_> philosophy our children
are getting in their litera-
ture," Mrs. Richards said.
"No absolutes are
taught. In teachers' man-
uals, the instructors are
told not to moralize, to not
help the children form any
conclusions on what is
right and wrong."
Mrs. Richards said liter-
ature textbooks and some
social studies books con-
tain "nothing but tales of
delinquency, violence, dis-
respect for parents and
any other type of authori-
ty.
"Children are learning
violent behavior and delin-
quency directly from the
schools," she declared.
She said some of the
books children are encour-
aged to check from librar-
ies and read are recog-
nized classics by such au-
thors as James Baldwin,
Chekhov, Dostoyevsky and
Tolstoy.
"While they are literary
classics, w« feel children
are introduced to them too
young. They are concerned
with nothing but sex, sex-
ual deviation and drunken-
ness. This is all the chil-
dren find in their books.
They make this type of
cpnduct appear to be the
norm and this is not true
to life." Mrs. Richards
said.
She said children get
nothing but a steady diet
of conflict, controversy, vi-
olence, torture, the occult.
Such subjects as stoning
and mutating people and
animals, satanism and
witchcraft teach a philoso-
phy of futility, Mrs. Rich-
ards believes. ‘
Mrs. Richards, of Pied-
mont, Mrs. Charles Smith,
Norman, and Mrs. Wilbur
Mason, 2917 Utah, are
among the mothers who
will appear before the leg-
islative group.
One supporter of the
women's position .is Dr.
Edward F. Blick, profes-
sor of aerospace, mechani-
cal and nuclear engineer-
ing at the University of
Oklahoma.
While Dr. Blick will not
appear at Tuesday's hear-
ing, he said he has made
similar appeals to legisla-
tive groups in the past,
and is deeply concerned
with the "gutter language"
contained in junior high
and high school texts.
He also would like to see
science books present the
theory of creation as well
as the theory of evolution.
"Most of the biology
textbooks in use in Oklaho-
ma present only the theory
of evolution and include no
evidence for special crea-
tion."
The Tuesday hearings
begin at 1:30 p.m.
