Richard E. Romang,
newly elected state court
• o appeals judge, has offi-
cially resigned the state
senate seat he held for 10
years, he said today.
He said he had mailed
his resignation, effective
today, to Gov. Bartlett.
The governor was due
back in the state late to-
day from a trip to the east
on which he combined new
industry hunting with de-
livery of $23 millions of
s?ate building bonds to
New York City buyers.
Dates to Be Set .
The governor is expect-
ed to issue a proclamation
at once setting dates for
special elections at which
Romang's successor in the
senate will be elected.
Romang, a Republican
house member from Enid
before he went to the sen-
I a t e, coincidentally an-
nounced his resignation
. with the release o an at-
torney general's opinion he
- requested.
Ruling Cited
' Atty. Gen. G. T- Blan-
1 kenship ruled that the lat-
’ est he could resign would
be a date allowing enough
' time for the governor to
set special primary and
general elections to fill the
vacancy before the legis-
lative sessions open Jan. 5.
The primary cannot be
sooner than 15 days after
the proclamation, he held.

CLEVELAND. Ohio
(AP) — A deliberately set
• » fire in an empty apart-
' ment building apparently
; led to a major fire which
• firemen s^ld r'ltsed -n nr-
timated $1 million (!• m?/-e
and destroyed a church, j
school and two businesses
on Cleveland's Erst Sdc
• early today.
Firt Chief William E.
Berry said the fire in the
vacant five-story anert-
ment building was deliber-
ately set.
Firemen theorized that
sparks from that fire, car-
ried by gusting winds,
« spread to nearby struc-
tures, including St. Fran-
cis Cathdlic Church and
' the church elementary
school.
More than 120 firemen
and 25 of the city's 38 fire
• trucks fought the fire.
Firemen said the b’aze
apparently broke out
shortly "before 1 a m. It
was brought under control
about 4:30 a.m. There
were no injuries.
Also destroyed was the
F. W. Woolworth Co. store
on the west side of the
apartment building and
the Miller Bros. Shoe
Store.
Fifty persons above the
Cleveland Trust Co.
branch bank at 7049 Supe-
' rior were evacuated as
; were about 35 persons in
J homes on the block beh nd
f the apartment building.
