•; NEW YORK (AP) — Au- I
thorltles say a father of I
lour who was arrested on I
drug charges used teams j
of children to peddle nar- 1
oo tics.
Victor Santiago, 39, was
taken before Judge Mi-
' . chael Gagliano in Brook-
» lyn Criminal Court where
Asst. Dist. Atty. David Ep-
stein said:: “This man con-
ducts a Fagin-like activity
in the sale of drugs, using
teams of children in these
sales.”
Spectators Applaud
About 500 spectators in
the courtroom applauded
when Gagliano ordered
Santiago held In $100,000
bail for a hearing Feb. 5.
"If these charges are
true,” Judge Gagliano
said, "then this man is
. worse than Jesse James.
* If they’re true, he may
have ruined the health and
morals of children and if
any of them are addicted I
think he should not spend
a peaceful day the rest of
his life.”
Police said they found 14
decks of heroin, a quantity
of marijuana and equip-
ment used in the narcotics
trade in a Brooklyn base-
ment laboratory when they
picked up Santiago Thurs-
day. They charged him
with possession of narcot-
ics with intent to sell.
Boys Tipped Police
Authorities were tipped
off to Santiago’s where-
abouts early Tuesday after i
arresting three boys—11,
13 and 15 years old—as
heroin peddlers on the
sidewalks of Coney Island.
The boys were charged
with juvenile delinquency
and held for a hearing in
Children's Court.
The three told police
they each sold an average
- of 90 bags of heroin at $10
apiece every day and each
cleared about $50 dally.
The rest went to the collec-
tor.
