Whether or not this be true the fact
remains that it is one of the most
potent factors in the molding of a
high class soldiery and citizenry One
thing however is necessary for the
complete success of such a policy and
that is that every man from a private
in the rear ranks to the supreme
command must have the same regard
for recognized custom or tradition
If the man who is passing by the sol-
dier in rank or the highest command-
ing officer does not stand at attention
while the band plays our national
anthem he is not only violating one
of the most sacred customs of the
American nation but he is at the same
time losing the respect of his fellow
men
The soldier who fails to observe this
custom is dimerited by his superiors
the officer who ignores this unwrit-
ten duty is scorned by his men Such (
breaches of discipline have happened
but recently in the Sooner regiment
and though the general conduct of
Oklahoma cadets is beyond criticism
such offenses as disregard for na-
tional airs cannot be winked at by the
thinking student

This came about through a mere
