Some o! the laboerrs on mile 13
are still waiting for their pay
Their boss went away about two
weeks ago and has not showed
up yet He went away owing
SQtnd 18 or 20 of his labors for a
" aaonthsjqr more of work and it
fttjbegl" to pinch with them
"They bareliad several' promises
fromthe head contractor of the
cdnstruction work that thry-
would get their pay but promise
do not pay grocery bills and
feed bills So it has come to a
show down with these men and
they are going -‘to have their
monitor know the reason
why'

on roads aae crowded with wag-
ons hauling ties By the time ihe
road is completed aud trains run-
ning there will be many train
loads bf ties to haul out
Quite a great many of the rail-
road camps are moving oa miles
ID and 20 It seems that these
two miles were contracted out
several times but the contractors
went back on their contracts so
it was a case -of try try again
with the company until they
did get one or two tljat would
stick The grade work on these
two miles was very light and it
was bard to Und a contractor
that would take them '
The work on mile 13 has" been
delayed quite a bit in fact it has
been the unlucky mile It was
the most diflicnlt mile in the 20
to grade and to make matters
worse the contractor who took
it underestimated the j work and
priced it too cheaply lie wor-
ried along with his job until he
run out of money then he got uy
and left for parts unknown -and
with a lot of laborers unpaid
The timber work at the pres-
ent time is'nearly altogether tie-
making and this will form the
bulk of the timber work until the
steel is laid on ‘the new rqad
Following this and with trains
running the timber work will
start up on a much larger scale
and with many more kinds of
work Saw mills will be put in
and all kinds of timber will be
worked up into lumber ties
mine props etc thus more help
Will be needed to carry on the
greater variety of work Then
the work will reach out much
further than it does now At the
present time the timber work ex-
tends out only a mile or two on
each side of the road
Quite a number of people have
asked if the railroad and tie la-"
borers pay-up their store bills
promptly I have heard very lit-
lie complaint from the merchants
along this line so I suppose the
laborers are trying to live holi-
est and straight as they should
It seems to be a matter oE trust-ing-a
stranger for two weeks as
most oftbe laborers arc strang-
ers to the merchants and have
nothing to buy with until they
make it outof their labor wilh a
pay day every two weeks
The writer has been pretty
busy the past week and has not
bad time to get out and gather
up the railroad and -tie news
so this may not be as interesting
as it should be
