Oklahoma City and Avry Chapel is to be congratulated upon the se-
lection of Rev J E Toombs as the new pastor of Avery Chapel certain it is
that a great big full sized man would have to com to th capital city to fill
the place of Dr T H Wisman who was called by transfer to a larger charge
Dr Toombs is a ripe scholar and a born leader of men He has been
a successful pastor at many important points in the state and southwest
His coming to Avery simply means that the high standard that Methodism
has maintained here for years will be continued
Again Dr Toombs has demonstrated during the year he has been in
the state that he is a most excellent business man the Odd Fellow order
and the Tabor order whose books he has kept for many years as secretary
attest this fact so in addition to his scholarly attainments for the pulpit
Dr Toombs brings also the spirit and the capacity to help the city along
material lines and we make this prediction that the coming years will see
Avery taking higher ground under his leadership
t THE DISGRACE
It is stated on good authority that Governor Rebertson has said that the
Individuals who he appoints to office must first be men — then democrats
We trust that tbe good Governor will exercise this broad gauged
statesmanship in the matter of his Negro appointees and we say this not
for the reason that we fear he will not but for the reason that we can
not help looking back towards the democratic attitude since statehood on
this subject
: Without fear of contradiction we feel that with few exceptions the
Negroes that have been called to appointive positions by democrats since
democratic control have been a disgrace to the state and a discredit to
the race
Go out to the State House today approach any state o cial and im-
mediately that official assumes an attitnde of suspicion that leads his black
auditor to feel that the state official feels that a grafter has arrived
: Now this condition has developed up out of the fact that grafters are
the only gang that the democrats have allowed to be heard at the State
House since they took control Remember Hogan S' Douglass Russell
ct al what standing did they have with the race? Well they could make
-or break their betters for years until the jails yawned and exile looked good
- Again while we are glad to see a considerable number of the race
employed at the State House at the humble job of spittoon cleaning (for
we think that all work is honorable) we most strenuously object to these
men representing themselves to be leaders of a set of people who have
trained and cultured minds and who have themselves centered upon their
twn true and tried leadership
The Negroes of this state have Various organizations that are headed
by able thinking Negroes who it would be well for Governor Robertson
To look up if he desires consultation as to what the Negro of worth and
ability desire want and need take the Masonic order headed by Honorable
It Emmett SteWart b? the Pythian order headed by Dr Chas B Wickham
or the Odd FtelloW birder whose chief Is Col E D Jefferson go into the
Baptist ranks hiid pick up the State President Rev J A Anderson of
Okmulgee or Rev E W Perry of Oklahoma City or turn t6 the Methodist
with Rev C R Tucker of Tulsa or Rev J E Toombs of Guthrie Think
of our solid capable business men such as Hon G W P Sawner of Chand-
ler C T Telleferro of Perry of the Lawyers such as E T Barbour of
El Reno Judge Robt Fortune of Chickasha or W H Twine of Muskogee-
these are all men they are not spittoon politicians and the race would
feel honored were they to know that Governor Robertson was listening
to them in outlining his policies
