Old Age Pension* !

offered 83 millions worth of bands for
sale Friday, and nobody would buy
them.
For the first time in year*, not a
single Investment bouse bid on the
bond*. Oregon—for the moment—1*
ranked as a potential deadbeat.
It’* aU because the voters appar-
ently didn’t understand what they
were doing. They approved a 850
monthly old age pension—regardless
of need—which would cost the state
three times what it now spends on all
functions put together
But they didn’t approve any way
to finance the pension And they re-
fused to authorise spending a 840 mil-
lion tax surplus—presumably In the
mistaken belief that the r.„_c-_r:
meant more taxes.

Plan Homecoming Perils Old Fears Debunked
NEW YORK. Nov. S—The
new things science Is making for
comfort and pleasures may be caus-
ing some of the increase in can-
cer. Dr. John R. Heller jr. of the
national cancer institute reported
Saturday.
To find out. he told the annual
meeting of the American Cancer
society, a new kind of research lab-
oratory is being set up at George-
town university medical school.
This laboratory will study environ-
ment’s role in cancer.
Nearly aU the known causes of
cancer, said Dr. Heller, are external
—they are things man cor'sa in
contact with in his work or his
community. They do not come from
his own body.
Thia, he added, has caused sus-
picion that search will uncover
many more external causes of can-
cer.
•Industrial progress." he said,
"ha* been marked by many new
substances contributing to the com-
fort and pleasures of Ufe, but these
same substances have been adding
a whole new spectrum of poison*
to man’s hazards.** He named coal
tors and arsenic compounds a* al-

causes which he said are proven
are soot, paraffin oil. creosote,
nickel carbonyl, benzol and some
For fair-skinned people. Dr. Hel-
ler said, too much sunshine can
cause cancer. Radioactive sub-
stances, now becoming plentiful
with atomic energy, are among the
most dangerous known causes.
Wastes that get into the air, water
and ground from industry need to
be studied
Dr. Heller said that the synthetic
oU industry, that proposes to make ,
tomorrow’s gasoline out of coal. :
may carry new cancer hazards.
These dangers he said are not prov-
en, but neither are they disproven,
and they should be studied.
A list of things not to worry
about was given by Dr. Herbert L.
Lombard, director of the division of
cancer and other chronic diseases
of the Massachusetts department of
public health. All were token from
beliefs about cancer.
Drinking boiled water to not a
preventive. You can’t catch cancer
at funerals. Syphillto to not the
cause of cancer. Don’t bother, as
one woman did. to get a full-length,
three-way mirror to look at your-
self every day for signs of cancer.
Don’t be like the editor who had
a lip cancer removed, and then re-
fused to print anything about the
disease because he said he didn't
want to hear anything more
about it.
