MOUNTAIN DROVE. Mo.. March
30—(UP)—The Missouri highway pa-
trol organised a manhunt throughout
the Oaark' mountains Tuesday for
Ernest Aston Scott, 4*. whom wit-
nesses said killed his estranged wife
and a circuit judge Monday.
Police were attempting to determine
why Scott killed Judge Charles H.
Jackson. 5S. who sat on the Wright
county circuit court bench.
Derangement Is Theory
Ono theory was that Scott may
have become deranged and killed the
judge because he was scheduled to
hear the divorce suit of Scott’s wife,
Verla, 31. Other witnesses mid, how-
ever, that there had been "some
trouble" between Scott and tho judge
over a land deal.
Jackson was killed Monday after-
noon while visiting at the farm of An-
drew Torkelson, seven miles south of
here.
Torkelson told police Capt. J. A.
Tandy that Scott appeared suddenly,
shot the judge with a .33 caliber pis-
tol. and then fled in his car.
Thirty minutes later Scott showed
up at the home of his wife's mother,
Mrs. Mary Rainey, where Mrs. Scott
had been staying with her children
since she separated from her husband
