AVIATION AND SIXTH SENSE
Makes an Appeal to the Organs of
Equilibrium That They Have
Never Had Before
Human aviation makes an appeal to
the semicircular canals (which are our
organs of equilibration) that they
have never had before' In so far as
aeroplane equilibrium is not secured
through the machine Is not mechanic-
ally automatic It must depend upon
the aviator's sight touch muscle pres-
sure and semicircular canal sense and
to that extent man must bring the sen-
sitiveness of these parts to the stand-
ard of the bird The bird depends
wholly upon sight and semicircular
canal Senses in flying Possibly some
animals can outrival man in every
sense certainly in scent and proba-
bly in sole use of the equilibrial sense
organs But man undoubtedly Pos-
stases the highest average of all ani-
mals He has evolutionally passed
through every grade of excellence
achieved by any animal with any
sense But lessened demand on one
sense through increased service of
others must cause some deterioration
In the unused sense Has the service
of our semicircular canals retrograd-
ed? It is Just possible for man to
place himself In a position of sole re-
Hance upon his equilibrial sense—in
dark briny water while the fish is so
dependent every night In a bird the
equilibria sense must act far more
quickly than in the fish The bird
gets aid from its eyes which change
focus more quickly than man's eyes
We know that our equilibrial sense is
slow compared with its chief assis-
tants sight and touch Our equilibrial
sense does not ordinarily reach con-
sciousness except in severe conditions
Did it at one time and have the nerves
Df connection simply weakened through
disuse ?—Harperes
Stock Exchange Securities
Though the United States is still a
debtor nation on general balance Its
people stand second only to those of
Great Britain as holders of securities
listed on recognized stock exchanges
and lead the investors of France by a
large margin The sum total of all
the stock exchange securities in the
world is nearly one hundred and six-
teen billion dollars of which the Brit-
ish hold twenty-seven billions the
Americans twenty-five billions the
French twenty-one billions and the
Germans eighteen billions The days

Sebu Tourist Route
Is the Nile to have a rival for tour-
ist trade in the Sebu? A French offi-
cer has just succeeded in piloting a
motor boat drawing about three feet
of water within halt a dozen miles of
Fez Not only was he able to sur-
mount all the obstacles in the Sebu
river but he managed to pass the
mouth of the Fas the smaller stream
which comes down through the Sheree-
fian capital in a series of famous falls
A dahablyeh or even an everyday
houseboat on the Sebu may soon be
t the most attractive proposal of the
tourist agencies when their "pacific
penetration" of Mu lay Hafid's empire
Is completed

The illustration to my thinking
gives the daintiest dress of all and
very smart women often order a num
ber of country frocks bLilt on just
such simple lines Materials may vary
according to the use which will be
made of the gown but the side but
toning on this one-piece style the con
'meting collar ant cuffs and the easy
neck and sleeve cuts never vary
Linen and duck dresses made in this
way are used for boating and golf
and they are admirable for city mar-
keting and other shopping while for
working use the dress would very
likely be in good gingNam in a more
practical color
But why always have one's working
clothes in a practincal color thinks
somebody and why indeed If one
loves gay ones and looks well in
them? So I want to tell you that such
plain little gowns would be charm
ing if made of gingbams in the dain-
tier colors—pale blue viclet pink yel-

SMARTENS UP OLD WASTS
Little Bolero of Embroidery in the
Latest Fashion Surely Will Work
I Wonders
Some of the new dress garnitures
are really net boleros resplendent
with jewels spangles and beads They
are so elaborate as to suggest the
glitter of the stage dancer but are
not overgenerous when worn with the
dark gown of simple lines A good
device in making over the last year's
dress is to use the little bolero of em-
broidery It will make an old waist
look very smart Oriental embroider
lea may be used in this way to good
advantage
The most economical and satisfac-
tory way of obtaining a band-embrol
dered shirt wast is to purchase a ready
made waist with machine embroi-
dered design and work over the em-
broidery by hand thus saving stamp-
ing padding and making the waist A
blouse embroidered in this way is just
as truly hand embroidered with the
added advantage of being quickly and
accurately done
Applying Invisible Patch
To apply an invisible patch to
woolen material place the patch un-

wool thread raveled out from the new
material or the piece you are patch-

to scrub the floor In much a dress but
dinner could be cooked while wearing
It for it is understood that a dainty
dress must be protected with a large
apron While fresh the frock in a
delicate color made up in this man-
ner would be good enough for re
ceiving company morning or after-
noon as nobody dresses as much In
summer as in other seasons
When making up house gowns the
tricks of the trade should certainly be
observed if one wants the genuine
house effect and lasting usefulness
For example the shop dresses both
bodice and skirt are put together
with pudding-baa seams—sewed drat
on the right side then on the wrong—
this arrangement permitting much
better possibilities with laundering
Then as pearl buttons of good sort
are always dearer than fancy bone
ones a number of the frocks show the
smartest knob fasteners in bright col-
ors One black and white percale
frock seen recently was decked off
with knob hone buttons lb a rich wa-
termelon pink these running down the
side of the dress from the neck to
hem Buttons of the same sort or in
blue violet yellow green or any other
color can be had for 12 and 25 cents
a card If the dress is not to be
washed much too or the wearer is
willing to spend a title time adding
the touch after laundering' a band of
black lawn or calico put under the
hem gives the skirt more cachet and
with this addition a bias of the same

Cult of Gathers
In many of the little lingerie dressk
es a slight fulness is distributed in
gathers about a waistline that has
again shifted to about its normal po-
sition These gathers however are
only possible for slim figures They
are flattened into tucks for more
portly forms An attractive yoke is
made by shining this fulness over
cords but let the one with the least
tendency to plumpness beware of this
effect if any tidiness of figure is prized
The horizontal lines of these cords
about the hips have a directly oppo-
site effect from the long vertical lines
on which everything has been planned
for some seasons past—so there is a
discount on one's height Naturally
any fabric intended for shirring over
cord must be of a decidedly diaphanous
nature Where a second material is
used for trimming chiffon cloths
found very successful because this
season it can be used with almost
every sheer textile that is used for

The Thessalonian Christians were

same principles apply in our day to
religious fanaticism sometimes in
connection with the second coming of
the Lord to whom the appeal has come
to be quiet and to attend to business
The principle appeals as well to the
lower spheres of life The kaleido-

we do not know at what moment
some social or political proposition
will be made that is a shock to our

only the religious person but the citi-

the world is growing less so rapidly

cast before us
