Honor in Politics
According to reports Senator
A J Gronna of North -Dakota
has some old-fashioned ideas of
political honor that the politi-
cians of today are too often with
out The senator says he is going
back home to support the Re-
publican ticket from top to bot-
tom including the presidential
electors and he gives his reasons:
“If I left the Republican par-
ty I should feel under obligation
to resign my seat in the senate
I was elected by the Republicans
as a Republican and I am still a
Republican” - ' -
Senator Gronna was a stubborn
anti-Tafter prior to and during
the Chicago convention but it
seems he is first of all a good Re-
publican To the Republican
party he is’indebted for the Uni-
ted States senatorship which he
now holds As a matter of sim-
ple fairness he has decided to
stay with the party that has
stood by him
The man who is sent to the
house or senate by Republicans
should feel that he is in honor
bound there to stand firm with
that party If he can’t do that

The Party Never Sectional
Some of the newspapers that
are writing' epitaphs of the Re-
publican party say that it is dy-
ing of sectionalism They read
history to poor advantage and
falsely ' estimate conditions ' of
the day There never has been
a year in which the Republican
party more distinctly asserted
itsi selfraspect and devotion to
principle As for sectionalism
the party is 'to-day as always
the most broadly national of
political organizations - It was a
tremendous contest for fin ‘undi-
vided nation that called the ‘ Re-
publican party - into existence
and the ' United States as it
stands a union of forty-eight
states and outlying' possessions
is the accomplished result In
the Vast responsibility of saving
the Union infact a great number-
of Democrats joined and bore
their share with unsurpassed
courage jmd patriotism ' But it
was this Republican ' party that
sustained ! the administrative
leadership and that‘s has held it
through yearly" all succeeding
years'
The Republican- party has
ever been the champion of a na-
tion of freemen” from ocean to
ocean No American citizen has
been treated as a man without a
country and not a foot of Ameri-
can soil is held to be entitled to
lessthan just equal considera-
tion Tlas the South prospered
less than the North since the
Union was preserved from dis-
ruption? Arc the' prospects of
the South less favorable than
those of any other geographical
division? Is the $400 GOO 000
provided for the Panama Canal
an expenditure showing any dis-
crimination? A new party has
taken the ground that some mil-
lions of voters are not entitled
to be represented in a national
convention There is sectional-
ism but the Republican party is
not and never was the place to
look for it — St Louis Globe-
