$190000000 TO BE SPENT FOR GOOD
' ROADS IN UNITED STATES DURING SIX
MONTHS BEGINNING FIRST DAY OF JULY
Oklahoma Gets Over A
Million Dollars of
Federal Fund
Washington July 7 — (Associated
Press) — Approximately $100000-
000 will be spent for good road con-
struction throughout the country du-
ring the fiscal year which began Ju-
ly 1 This will be brought about by
the continuation of Federal aid for
roads under recent authroization of
an appropriation of almost fifty mill-
ion dollars for distribution among
the several states Under the condi-
tions of the aid each state must match
the sum allotted it
At the same time the postoffice
appropriation bill signed by Presi-
dent Harding June 18 authorized
appropriation of $65000000 for the
same purpose to be expended during
the fiscal year beginning July 1st
1923 and $75000000 for the suc-
ceeding fiscal year The conditions
are the same for all three years and
will bring the total amount expended
during the period if the states ad-
here to the stipulations and spend
like sums to $380000000 The
funds will be administered by the
Secretary of Agriculture through the
Bureau of Good Roads

25t00 Miles of Roads
It is estimated that the $190000-
000 approbated will result in the
mites of road which added to the
46OOJ miles that are expected to
result from previous federal appro-1
priations makes a total of 71000 j
miles or nearly 40 per cent of the i
estimated 180000 miles of good I
roads on the system of federal aid
roads row being outlined
With the aid of the $350000000
previously appropriated by the gov-
ernment 17000 miles of road1 had
been completed on last May 31 and
in addition nearly 14500 miles were
under construction involving more
than 2S7500000 of Federal aid
To match this fund the states have
appropriated approximately $380-
000000 making a total of $667000-
000 The average cost per mile of all
types of road construction with fed-
eral aid has been $17210 of which
43 per cent has bejn the cost to the i
government The new legislation
however reduces the maximum par-
ticipation on the part of the gov-
ernment from $20000 to $1EC50
er mile for the first fiscal year and
$15000 thereafter The pppropti-
ntiors are to be used or construction
of a connected system of primary er 1
inter-state and secondary or inter-
county roads
It is further provided that the
state receiving aid must maintain
adequate highway departments
must maintain the federal roads
when completed must construct
roads sufficient to the traffic an-
ticipated and must match the
amounts allotted by the govern-
ment Otherwise the federal fund
for new projects will be withheld
Plans for the proposed system
have already been received by the
Bureau of Good Roads from all but
eight states and the state systems!
are being co-ordinated so that I
when joined together they will!
servfe the best interests of the j
whole country In the meantime
only projects certain to be on the
proposed system are being ap-
proved All States Get Money
The apportionment to be made
to the various states for the fiscal
year which began July 1 is ap-
proximately as follows:
Alabama $1035614
Arizona 702188
Arkansas 836095
