pecially for the farmers who speak
and understand the German' lan-
guage Mr Frank Marshilc'' ’ of
Okeenei Oklahoma explains ' ’ the
plan of the U S Grain ’ Growers
Incorporated in German or Rus-
sian Mr Walter B Jesse of Sup-
ply Oklahoma will explain the
same in English
The U S Grain Growers market
ing organization is of vital in-
terest to every grower and pro-
ducer of grain when it is proper-
ly undcstood Every fairjrer should
hear it explained and investigate
it The Board of Trade and or-
ganized grain exchanges and line
elevators are fighting it With all
of their might and skill backed
by one million dollars in money
tht they have grafted the farmer
and producer Cixt of in the past
Come to this meeting hear this
plan explained in farmer’s plain
language by honest farmers who
can be relied upon Mr-Geo Ehr-
- lich will act as chairman of this
meeting and it will be called to
order at 8:00 o’clock promptly Mr

U S Grain Growers organization
to protect the farmer’s interests
in Oklahoma and Texas ' A house
full Of farmers is expected It
costs you nothing to have this
explained to you You are urged
to be at this meeting by tLe local
committee
Property owners of the town
ought to be interested enough in
the welfare of the community to
be willing to work for 'the good
of it While one or two men may
act as leaders of the people they
must do a lot of individual work
in order to put the town where!
it ought to be'

THIEVES AT WORK IN ELLIS
COUNTY r
On Monday night of this week
thieves effected an enterance to
the DrivC In filling station at Shat-
tuck and made" good thteir escape
with in the neighborhood of one
hundred and fifty dollars of the
company’s v cash ' as nearly as it
has been - possible for the local
Pierce Oil Corporation’s manager
to determine It is estimated that
entrance was made to the station
early in the morning of Monday
and so far'no clue has been found
as to the identity of the person
or persons who are the guilty part
iesY
Another attempt to rob the bank
at Arnett earlier in the week ha3
been reported to the county au-
thorities and no clue has been
found as to who were the guilly
parties in that case but it has
reasonably been surmised that the
same' agencies have been respon-
sible in both cases Feeling in
general thruout the county is run-
ning high as a result of the out-
rages and officers arc on the look-
out and keeping their eyes on all
suspicious characters -who land in
this section The people of the
country will not be likely to show
any leniency in case of the appre-
hension of any one guilty of such
a -deed and ' will probably insist
that the limit be administered as
punishment
American people and American
farmers are finding it a lonesome
job of supplying food for hungry
Europeans who cant take time
endugh from their fighting to
raise a crop of food but the Am
erican people and the American
farmer know that those who are
suffering are in ‘ no wise respon-
sible for the food shortage there-
fore thy will continue to feed the
hungry women and children of
Europe while the husbands and
fathers fight and squabble over
impractical theories
A GOOD TIME TO BUY PURE
- BRED LIVE STOCK !
“ '
Right now is a particularly good
time to begin to build up that-
herd of pure bred live stock you
have been considering so long We
are carrying an ad on our back
page of McNeely’s second annual
sale of ' pure bred Duroc Jersey
hogs which he will sell at his
farm near Arnett on -the 16th of
this pionth Bear in mind that
these' hogs are ' the ever-popular
Duroc Jersey stock and his herd
is one of the best in notrhwest
Oklahoma which he has been care-
ful to breed up to a very high
standard of excellence and we
think we can say Without exagger-
ation that he has succeededre-
markably well in giving Qlis
County a herd of swine of which
all of us shoald be proud and one
which is more widely known than
most people -think Any one who
is an admirer of good stock in
general and particularly the giant
Duroc Jersey kind would be amp-
ly repaid for the trip to attend
this sale i
High grade and thoro bred catt’e
are sellingrather cheap just now
and it would be a mighty good
time to procure a start of such1
animals with the iaea of bringing)
your herd up to the pure bred 1
c’ass Ge some high grade stuff
liow while the prices are down
within your reach and begin now-
to raise stock-that will top the
market "There are several pure
bred cattle in the county and most
or ners have some that are for
sale1
We have an ideal country here
for live stock dairying and hog-
iaising and it is destined in ’our
opinion to take the place of grain
raising as the leading industry of
he county Cow chickens ' and
voes will lift the mortcave muck-
er than wheat oats and kaffir
SHATTUCK BASE BALL TEAM
WINS ANOTHER! VICTORY
f -
Easily Takes Big End Of Score
Form Speedy Follett Aggre- '
gation On Local Diamond
Last Sunday
It would have- been a good
tkjimg for these' pessimists Jwhfi-
claim - that" 'Shattuck Can’t A play
ball td have seen the 'clever Way
in whick they walked away-with
the big end of a ten to- nothing
score when they met the Follett
unch who are reputed to be fast
players on the local diamond last
Sunday afternoon’ It was plain-
ly evident' from the first toss up
that the Texans were ovei match-
ed when - -they met our Oklahoma
aggregation 'ho matter what their
reputation in their home state
might be' and the early judgment j
was borne out Vihen it was left1
to Shattuck to make all of the
ten scores that were made during
the game Every member of our
home team did himself proud 'on
this victorious day and the steam
roller which ’ they started at the
beginning of the game lasted thru
the whole nine innings’ ' Clyde
Stout in ' jhe ' pitchers box - and
Cleat Nation behind the bat are
entitled to especial - mention for
the rapid way in which they put
out the Follett star batters We
feel that the game was such that
none who were there can say that
they wre disappointed in the kind
of playing that they saw
SHATTUCK PUBLIC SCHOOLS
TO BEGIN MONDAY
Next Monday September 5th is
the day which has been decided
upon by the local school board for
the opening day of our public
schools and it is urged that par-
ents who have children of school
age be prepared to have them en-
ter on the first day in order that
no inconvenience either to them-
selves or their teachers may be ex-
perienced ' because of their tardy
enrollment Our new superintend-
ent Mr Ward is very optimistic
in regard to the outlook for a
successful school year this year
and it is our duty ap citizen of
the town to see that he - is not
disappointed in the amount of sup
port which he rightly expects from
us Get back of the schools this
year folks and let’s see that we
maintain our reputation as a town
that is justly proud of its school

NEW SHATTUCK HOSPITAL
OPEN FOR PATIENTS 1
t
The first patients were admitted
to the new Shattuck Hospital dur-
ing the last few days of last week
and there appears to be no doubt
but that it will be filled to cap-
acity just as rapidly as the rooms
can be arranged for use At pres-
ent but' few of -the rooms have
been furnished and only tempor-
arily at that owing to the fact
that the furinture for which the
enterprising’ business men of the
town have contributed so liberal-
ly jias not yet arrived 'However
it will not be long now until the
hospital will be ready for the re-
ception of as many patients as can
be accommodated in the building
e can seen no reason why the Shat
tuck Hospital should not prove a
great success and a' drawing card
for the town We certainly have
physicians and surgeons in the
town who are up-to-date and com-
petent to handle the most difficult
cases' and we are willing to do our
part and more in order to give
them the support they are en-
titled to expect Boost the hos-
pital boost the local doctors it
will not hurt you any and it will
help the town
Secretary Hughes seems to have
won the merited approval of both
democrats and republicans in the
way in which he handled the ne-
gotiations of the peace treaty with
Germany Most folks will agree
that it was a diplomatic victory
for Mr Hughes

- FIRST MEETING OF SEASON
r
- NEXT WEDNESDAY
The local organization of the
Sorosis Club will hold ' its first
meeting of this season next Wed-
nesday - afternoon at the Presby-
terian church It is not necessary
to introduce this club to the peo-
ple of Shattuck for those of us
who were here last year will iae sows
call that this organization altho
in its infancy was a very success-
ful working force in our commun-
ity last year and did some very
valuable work for itself and its
membefs The executive committe
has plans on foot to enlarge the
scope of the work to be done
this year which if carried out
will put the Sorosis Club on the
list of Shattuck’s most worthy
institutions We look for many
good things to ’ be done this sea-
son by the club and we believe
it will receive the hearty endorse-
ment nd support of the better
class of our citizens Every woman-in
town should be a member
of the Sorosis Club and take an
active" part in its work for we
believe in its purposes- and are
satisfied that it will prove a bene-
fit to each of its members
