The United States authorities rec-
ommend several poisons for this
work :
Azoa is what is known as a virus
which does not kill the rat immediate-
ly but infects it with a sort of fever
which Is contagious and which is re-
puted to kill all infected rats within
ten days to two weeks This bait is
not poisonous to cats dogs or chick-
ens etc It sets up some chemical ac-
tion in the vitals of the rat which
causes it to dry up when dead without
any offensive odor You can obtain it
at your drug store
Should Be Put Out Again Within a

baits be placed close together Mr
Rat is a suspicious animal and will not
touch one bait alone but if there are
three he will go from one to the other
and eventually go back to tbe first or
second and eat of It — result one more
dead rat
This is put up In one ounce pack-
ages and retails for 25c per ounce
Some care should be exercised In Its
use however as (here is a possibility
of chickens or cats being affected by
it should they eat of the bait
Whatever poison you use — keep
water out of the rats reach It will be
necessary for tills operation to be re-
peated within about 3 or 4 weeks in
order to get tbe rats and mice now too
young to get to tbe bait
Clean Up the Rubbish
First— Rika and pick up all papers
rags sticks and other kind of rubbish
that will burn Pile them in a loose
pile as far rway from buildings and
fences as possible throw a piece of
chicken wire over the pile and burn
The chicken wire will prevent the
papers from blowing over your yard
and endangering yours and your neigh-
bors’ buildings
Second— Rake up rll other rubbish
of every sort pile it in the alley next
the fence in such' manner that the
drivers can pick it up with fork or
shovel When the wagons make your
alley he will pick up each pile in its
order For this he will charge from
25c to 60c for an average pile of rub-
bish If your pile is so large and un
wieldy as o require a special trip he
will see you before he loads Other-
wise the fact the trash is piled in the
alley will be his authority for loading
and be will expect to collect bis 26c
or 50c when it Is loaded
After you have cleaned up all trash
cut your wee-1 pile them up until dry
nd burn
Interest your boys in planting a veg-

Encourage the girls to plant flowers
Nothing is more pleasing than a yard

prettiest yards are those In which the
common “old fashioned” Dowers are
found The girls will be glad to do it
