every hamlet in the land has
been instituted by the National
Lumber Manufactures' associa-
tion in the proposal to build a
a home for every rural school
teacher in America
Oklahoma will be one of the
first states where the plan will
be carried into effect and a
thorough investigation of the
conditions in that state preceded
the announcement of the social
service plans of the lumber manu-
facturers The association has
not as yet formulated its plans
for pushing this new department
of public service by actually as-
sisting the schools of the nation
to build homes for teachers but
work on this philantropic enter-
prise is already under way and
the assosiation plans to have its
plans ready for announcement
in a few weeks
The plan to spread the gospel
of homes for school teachers over
the land was first broached only
a few weeks ago at a conference
of the directions of the associa-
tion It proved instantly popu-
lar The idea was taken up by
the United States Bureau of Ed-
ucation and the first result of
this co-operation between the
lumbermen of the nation and the
government itself is in the issu-"
ance of a brochure entitled
"Teachers' Cottages” by R S
Kellogg of Chicago secretary of
the National Lumber Manufac-
turers association in co-operation
with the United States
Bureau of Education and which
is being sent to every county
America The Rockefeller Foun
dation has already approved of
the plan and is giving $25000 to
foster this work with more
money to come
The proposal to build these
techers’ cottages all over the
land follows out the idea that has
already been carried into exten
sive success by the state of
Washington
The nationel association has
taken up this social service work
in the belief that the education
of the nation will be immensely
advanced if the teachers of the
natiop’s young' are properly
housed The theory is that: if
teachers are provided proper
homes the county districts will
be able to secure better teach
trs and avoid the constant
changes by which the schools are
always in a torn-up condition
Under present circumstances
the teaching of a country school
becomes simply a temporary ex-
pedient for the teacher tne first
term after getting a certificate
and ambitious teachers who are
anxious to grow in their proces-
sion and make something of
themselves go to the city schools
just as soon as possible where
living conditions are bettter
The country schoools are always
left with the largest proportion
of young inexperienced poorly
trained teachers
In order to further this plan of
propesly caring for the teachers
the lumberman’s organization i3
ready to prepare plans to assist
rural communities in providing
their teachers with the kinds of
homes which have proved satis-
factory in Washington anT in
the other more scattered locali-
ties where they have been built
Oklahoma is selected as one of
the first states for the general
introduction of this new idea of
teacher's cottage for every
rural school because though it
lias already made good progress
there is still vast for improve-
ment i
Here are some of the reports
in the governmental bulletin
from various sections of the
state:
In my opinion the teachers’
cottage comes nearer solving the
problem of rural education than
any other one idea yet advanced
It would take several pages to
discuss the many benefits result-
ing from it and then it must be
seen to be appreciated Many
apparently necessary evils of the
rural educational problem find
their solution automatically in
the establishment of a permanent
home for the teachers We hope
to some day have a teachers’
home for every shcoolhouse in
McClain county (S M McCuis-
tion County Superintendent
Purcell Okla)
There are two teachers’ cot-
tagers' ages in the county They
are not expensive buildings in
fact they are just box houses
They were put up merely as an
experiment but have proved
very satisfactory Tney have
enabled the district to get settled
men for principals for their
school and have helped them to
hold these teachers for a series

Hughes county reports five
teacherages that are proving
quite a success but in some of
them the teachers are required
to pay rent One teacher’s cot-
tage is reported in Pittsburgh
county
In Pushmataha county one dis-
trict has a house for the teacher
and the reason for this house ' is
as follows: "Several years ago
the teaches had a good deal of
difficulty in securing a house to
rent He finally built in the cor-
ner of the school yard which
was a large one and at the close
of school sold the building to the
district It has proved to he a
great convenience and they have
no trouble now in getting a
married man for a teacher The
school is loaated in ' a small vil-
lage’’ Semiilole county has two teach
ers’ cottages in the rural dis-
tricts and the plan is proving
very satisfactory In one in-
stance this year the teacher has
spent all his odd time during the
school term and during his vaca-
cation time in keeping the school
ground in shape One of these
districts pays $75 and $50 for
teachers the other $90 and $60
In each instance the house
furnished the teachers free
Garvin County has two homes
in the rural distriett schools
The only reason they have no
more homes in this county be-
cause they have not the money
to build them
Three cottages are reported in
Lafiore county In Jackson coun-
ty two common school districts
have cottages which are rented
to teachers
Madill Oklahoma reports that
four rural districts have built
neat dwellings on the school
premises for the purpose of hav-
ing a teacher on the school
ground during the entire term of
school The teacher pays $6 a
month into the school fund of
the district Board in the rural
district is most sought by the
teachers in the county ' The
people of the district consider
it a good investment ’Marietta
reports three rural ditricts in the
county that have constructed
teachers’ cottages
Jefferson county reports one
rural district a "live one” in
a two-teacher school where a
neat cottage has been erected as
a home for the teacher Imme-
diately there were a number of
successful teachers applying for
this school
In Kiowa county two such
homes are found (U S Bureau
of Education )
