SAVE YOUR EYES
By
Dr E B Alexander Sec-
retary Okla State Board
of Optometry
Sight is the only one of five
senses of man that can be over-
worked Sometimes wehear that
someone “strained his ears” to
hear hut did he really strain
them? Certainly no one can strain
his sense of taste and smell and
as for the sense of touch either
you feel It or you don’t - -
But with sight it is different
Seeing ’ involves muscular efforts
Ismail muscles both within and
without the eye direct vision and
'assist In maklne an exact focus
! within the eye Even normal eyes
I use large amounts of energy
I ((nerve force) and in defective
eyes a tremendous amount of
enerey Is allowed to go to waste
1 Thus it is seen that eye defects
have an Important bearing upon
one’s health and vitality
When one work for long
periods of time on exacting work
fatigue appears This Is true
whether the task is a physical
form of labor or the act of seeing
Thus ' the custom of choosing
! certain periods of the day as
periods fer rest and relaxation
arose But if these periods are
i used for close application of the
I eyes such as occurs when reading
I you do not rest you merely
chanie from one form of eXert-
iicn to another This accounts for
'the fact that many people are
I more tired after a so called “day
!of rest” j
When you “relax” and rest -'do
it completely - relax and rest
i the eyes as well as the remainder
c( the body
OVERWORKED EYES
It Is pretty safe to say that
thi eyes were designed for use
by daylight only if this is true
and there Is excellent reasoon to
believe it is then eyes may be
safely used for an equal number
of hours daily as we are provided
with dayUght ‘ ' :

Only for a very short period
of the year do we receive sixteen
hours of daylight some parts of
the year we receive only half
this amount yet we keep on
using the eyes the same number
of hours each "day whether winter
or summer prevails
No other organ of the body
is kept so busy True It Is that
the heart and lungs work con-
stantly you have no control over
them they were made to work
that way anyway But eves were
not Is it any wonder then that
eyestrain Is so common?
In other words working the
eyes as we do something is bound
to occur — either they will fall
us in early life or else we r-ust
treat them well giving t rem
every assistanct so that they may
give the added service you expect
and require of them
Eyes which are overworked or
abused become weakened much
more rapidly unless they are re-
lieved And a good plan Is too
rest them as frequently and as
much as possible close them now
and then a few moments avoid
glaring lights be kind to the
eyes
The Editor and Mrs Carley
were graciously remembered Tues-
day by their good friend Sam
Paschal who presented them
with some delicious peaches that
