PUBLIC PARTLY TO BLAME
FOR HIGH COST OF CLOTHING
The insistence of the public for
cloth made from fine wool fl R
large factor jn the present bigu proo
of clothing according to William M
Wood president of the American
Woolen company
"If our people would consent to
wear good substantial durable
clothes made of the coarser mater-
ials clothing would be purchased at
which now prevail Wood said
“It is generally thought the cost
of cloth is the controlling factor in
the cost of clothing but the fact is
that the cloth cost is less than half
the cost of a completed suit Other
factors contribute to the price of
clothing quite as much as the cost
of the cloth In the last few years
the prices of cloths of the ordinary
suit of clothes has advanced a little
less than the cost of other materials
that go into the making of the suit
“The cost in 1919 of the doth
for a suit of clothes of a particular
grade is $1367 The corresponding
cost in 1914 was $458 showing sn
increase in the cost of cloth of $909
"The 1919 cost of making this
suit is $1447 The corresponding
cost in 1914 was $498 showing an
increase in the cost of making of
$949”

Work more —
Produce more—
Save more—
But we can’t continue increasing our
production unless we continue increasing
our railroad facilities
The farms mines and factories cannot
increase their output beyond the capacity
of the railroads to hauj their products
Railroads are now near the peak of their
carrying capacity
Without railroad expansion — more en-
x gines morejcars more tracks more ter-
minals — there can be little increase in
production
But this country of ours is going to
keep right on growing — and the railroads
must grow with it
To command in the investment markets
the flow of new capital to expand railroad
facilities— and so increase production —
there must be public confidence in the
future earning power of railoads
The nation’s business can grow only as
fast as the railroads grow
