BANK BALANCE IS IMPORTANT

chase Fancy Bird
(Prepared by the United Btatea Department
of Agriculture)
Simple methods and simplicity ’ In
buildings equipment and rations have
much to do with the success of poultry-
men according to observations and
experiments made by the United States
Department of Agriculture There is
a mistaken Idea among many Inex-
perienced poultry rnisera that the
more elaborate the preparations made
for conducting a plant or for caring
for a small flock the better the chance
of success The safer way Is to keep
down expenses as much as possible
without Interfering with the health
comfort and nourishment of the birds
It Is natural to take pride In a fine-
looking building provided with all the
refinements that have been designed
to save labor and stimulate egg pro-
duction but the bank balance Is of
more Importance to the average per-
son than such satisfaction In build-
ing a poultry house superfluous pre-
cautions against the weather are fre-
quently taken Warmth is sought at
greatly increased overhead expense by
putting In double walls double floors
Interlaid paper ceilings etc when
single thicknesses well laid to pre-
vent drafts are sufficient except In
localities- where the winters are ex-
tremely severe
No Need for Ventilating System
Complicated and costly ventilating
systems are sometimes used when just
as good results would be obtained In
the production of eggs by using win-
dows and open fronts closed when
necessary by glass and cloth Wood
has been found the best material for
honse construction In most cases al-
though satisfactory buildings of other
materials are In use Concrete makes
A House Built of 8mgle Thickness

vided Through Doors and Windows
I All That lo Required
a good floor If built over a well-drained
‘foundation but if tliei poultry house Is
built entirely of this material it Is
liable to be too damp
Tonics and various concotlons add
to the expense of maintaining many
flock9 when they might very well be
eliminated Plenty of feed of the
right kind exercise and comfortable
quarters make the best health regula-
tors and are unequaled as stimulants
of egg production It has been the
experience of poultry raisers that a
Blck hen Is best treated by an applica-
tion of the hatchet
Strange to say the inexperienced
person who Is tempted to spend money
for unnecessary construction in - the
house and superfluous equipment Is
often Inclined to be niggardly when It
comes to paying out money for the
foundation of his flock prices for
market poultry serving as his guide
as to what' Is the proper price to pay
It Is not good business to pay fancy
prices to obtain birds of the highest
excellence for It takes an experienced
poultryman to realize on their pos-
sibilities If the location of a poultry business
Is a matter of choice there are a num-
ber of thlngs 'tg be considered Often
the proximity of a good or special
market ' fol eggs and chickens will
determine the selection
Rule for Figuring Expense
It is sometimes rather troublesome
for the owner of a poultry flock to
determine with much accuracy Just
what it costs him to maintain a flock
of laying hens Experience derived
from the egg-laying contests conduct
by the Farm bureau at Santa Cruz
has resulted in the formulation of a
rule that should be useful In arriving
at the approximate cost This rule
may be expressed as follows: All
of the expense for maintaining a flock
of laying hens apart from the cost
of grain and mash but Including mis-
cellaneous supplies interest on Invest-
ment depreciation all labor but that
of the owner' etc amounts to ap-
proxlmately two-thirds of the cost of
the grain and mash In other words
the cost of the grain and mash is 60
per cent and all other expense 40
per c eat o the total

Mobilization of the wild birds an
army of the air that allies Itself -with

follows the presence of large numbers
of Insects that prey upon growing
plants Their aid In stamping out ths
menace is almost incalculable says the
biological survey United States De-
partment - of Agriculture In Yearbook
Separate “Farm ' Help From the
Engllih Sparrow
Birds" Some Illustrations of what
the birds have' done are cited by the
department as follows:
On one Utah farm Infested by the
alfalfa weevil English sparrows alone
In one season fed to their young it
Is estimated 500000000 of the pests
making them about one-third of the
diet of the growing birds Sixty-six
kinds of birds feed on the cotton-bail
weevil the greatest feathered enemy
of this pest being the orchard oriole
A single stomach of this kind of bird
contained upon examination 41 ( boll
weevils The green bug or wheat aphis
also— but let the department tell the
story:
“On a 200-acre farm In North Chro-
lina where wheat rye and oats were-
severely attacked by green bugs lt
was found that the birds were very ef-
fective In destroying the pests " The
outbreak was at its height during the
migration season of such birds as the
goldfinch and the vesper and chipping
sparrows which with other species on
the- farm numbered more than 3000
Individuals It was found that these
birds were destroying green bugs at
the rate of nearly 1000000 a' day and
on days when additional flocks of mi-
grants were present this destruction
was doubled During the season such
numbers of birds flocked to the grain
fields that the aphis Infestation was
reduced- by an Incalculable number"
Hardly an agricultural pest exists
the department states but has numer-
ous effective bird enemies For- in-
stance 25 kinds of birds are known te
feed upon the clover weevil and a like
number on the potato beetle 30 on
the codling moth 43 on the gypsy
moth 49' on horseflies 67 on blllbugs
85 on clover-root borers 98 on cut-
worms 120 on leaf hoppers and-168 'on
wireworms
“A classic instance of the concentra-
tion of bird attack upon an army of
insect invaders” the department says
"occurred during the severe outbreaks
of the Rocky mountain locusts- be-
tween 1865 and 1877 So numerous
were these voracious pests that many
places "islted by them were- denuded
of every green thing A thorough In-
vestigation was made of the relation
of birds to the outbreak and1 it was
found that practically every species
from the largest birds of prey to the
tiniest humming birds from ducks and:
other aquatic fowl to- typical bird den-
izens of tBe dry plalnstrurned to feed
ing upon locusts Ini fact most birds
gorged thenselves with this abundant
supply of food and ini doing so were
the mean in numerous cases of sav-
ing crops from destruction”
IMPORTANCE OF VENTILATION
Uncomfortable Mousing Is Given ae
Cause of Freezing of Combe end
Scarcity of Egge
It Is net st much the cold as the
humidity that causes the freezing at
chickens’ combs and the winter laying
strike that results from uncomfortable
housing Proper ventilation Is given
as the most important consideration
in bousing poultry for the winter
“Powerizing” the Farm
Greater production the more
astute application of good busi-
ness methods the stabilization
of agricultural economics will
put farming — America’s basic
Industry— on a sound and sub-
stantial foundation If— -as the
closest students believe — Im-
' proved machinery and refined
sources of power will Increase
production lower costs and cut
some of the peaks and vallqys
out of the farmers’ profltgraph
then the steady "powerlzatlou”
of the American farm Is Inevi-
