TALKS OF ROSE INSECTS ’
t
Recently an item in the Fnterpriae
called for aome remedy for the inaecta
that were making havoc among the
roses This morning E R Cheesman
representing the Ottawa Nurseries
called to say that he had tend the item
and made soma suggestions that may
be of benefit to those who are having
trouble with their rose buahee
“The moat formidable enemy of rose
bushes are the rose bug and beetle”
said Mr Cheesman ” Of all orna-
mental garden plants the rose bush
perhaps suffers moat from Insect
peats The beetle is very destructive
if allowed to increase and Only by
daily inspection ran this tribo be des-
troyed It is often found buried in
the heart o fthe choicest light colored
flowers and it is more ’humiiyojs on
sandy soil About the only remedy
is handpicking which should be done
in the early morning Paria green
will kill the beetle but it also in-
jurors the foliage The application of
arsonate of lead one pound toteagal-
ions of water make an effective
spray The rose slug is usually found
on the under side of the leavee and
its presence Ray be detected by tne
skeletonized appearance of the leaf
They are small green sluglike worms
the larvae of a small black saw-fly
which may be seen busily at work
early in June and a second brood
works in August A decocotation made
of two tablespoons full of powdered
white hellebore to four gallons of
boiling water applied when cool with
whisk broom proves most effec-
tive Of course I do not know in
what condition bushes of your read-
ers may be and until I saw them I
am unable to say what is the matter
but as I said the rose beetle and slug
are the most common enemies of the
bush and it may be one or both of
these is what ii the trouble” Mr
Cheeseman says he will be glad to
give any information to those having
troubles with their plants His ad-
dress is Nowata — Bartlesville Enterprise
