SHALL WE INCREASE OUR TAXES?
Governor Williams’ proposed constitutional amendment to
Abolish the county courts would cost the taxpayers a great
deal more than the present court system It provides that a
probate clerk or commissioner to take the place of the County
Judge shall be appointed by the district judge for each county
this commissioner or clerk would be given some judicial powers
and should have the ability that would command the salary
'that the county judge now gets The salary of this one com-
missioner or clerk would offset any saving of salary now paid
the county judge Then beside this you will still have to pay
the salaries of the present force in the court clerk’s offices It
is admitted that we will have to have an additional district
judge in this district and that this district judge will have a
court stenographer — thi? item alone is an outlay of $4200 ad-
ditional per year There are 12 jurors required for the district
courts and only 6 for county courts The amendment would
just double the jury costs and fees If the district judge is out-
side the county and it is necessary to bring a matter to his im-
mediate attention you would be put to the expenses of travel-
ing to some other county r wait until he returns here and
holds court The law now requires the county court to be in
session six days in the week for probate matters Anyone knows
that it costs more to litigate his rights in the higher courts
than it does in inferior courts In case the amendment carries
it may be necessary to call an extra session of the legislature to
pass laws vitializing the amendment Few amendments have
carried but what have it has been necessary for the legisla-
ture to pass vitalizing laws The proposed amendment would
cost more than our present court system and make oujr courts
less efficient
