WASHINGTON NEWS
SENSATION BEFORE SENATE FINANCE
COMMITTEE
Big trusts and hired lobbyists
hoodooing farmers on reciprocity
A most sensational incident in
connection with Reciprocity oc-
curred before the Senate Finance
Committee last week Allen ard
Graham a firm of professional lob-
byists of New York were alleged
to be attorneys for the National
Grange They were brought be-
fore the Finance Committee and it
developed that they were not at-
torneys at all they were profession-
al lobbyists I Their business is to
promote or prevent legislation
The big trusts and monopolies have
been using the Grange and its or-
ganization to fight Reciprocity and
to prevent any reopening of tariff
revision Mr Allen of this firm
was compelled to admit on the
stand that the agent of the lumber
trust the agent of the pulp an d
paper trust the agent of the woolen
trust and the Protective Tariff Lea-
gue bad all agreed to contribute to
the expenses of the campaign The
cloven foot was thus revealed The
Italian hand of the trust magnates
was thus laid bare Allen and Graham
were to arouse and infiame the farm-
ers against Reciprocity and the big
trusts were to pay the bills The
farmers were to be used as a shield
and as a buffer to prevent any re-
vision of the tariff An appeal was
to be made to their interests
They were to be convinced that
Reciprocity would injure them
with a view to protecting the lum-
ber paper woolen and other trusts
Allen and Graham on one oc-
casion it was admiitc 1 hid repre-
sented the whiskey trust and on an-
other occasion otto of them had rep-
resented the Standard Oil trust as
lobbj ists
THE Moot SCHEDULE
A rather spiiited exchange of
compliments has taken place be-
tween Col Bryan and Mr Under-
wood the House Leader respect-
ing the wool and woolen schedule
It is lielieved that the critioal situ-
ation respecting this schedule has
materially impaired Speaker Clark’s
chances for the nomination Demo-
crats are disposed to eliminate
every candidate about whom there
is a bitter factional fight and nomi-
nate a man on whom practically all
factions on the party ean unite It
is believed by many that Woodrow
Wilson more nearly answers this re-
quirement than any one else
lORIMER’a BEELECTION TO BE INVES
TIOATED AGAIN
'I
The progressive Democrats and
progressive Republicans including
th Oklahoma Senators have forced
a reopening of the Lo rimer case in
the Senate The fight was suffici-
ently aggressiyj to insure a thorough-going
re-inlestigation of the
Lorimer brilxry charges and to in-
sure that full justice will be meted
out by the Senate when the case is
finally voted on again

The Child and the Light '
If a child for a time dislikes going
to sleep In the dark or wishes Its
door ajar — yield to it The dread will
soon pass If not artlflcally fostered or
made much of A child ought not to
have to confess In words to his fear
— that only tends to make it more
real and lasting He will grow ''out
of it And after all thla feeling of
helplessness In an unknown and mys-
terious universe Is very natural The
universe Is big and mysterious and
most alarming Custom - gradually
makes Its ordinarily friendly aspects
familiar while Its more portentous
manifestations are found to be ‘excep-
tional hut they are there behind the
scenes and It Is Just the exceptional
and portentlous of which we are In-
stinctively afralds— Sir Oliver Lodge

ADVICE TO
JOHN
feven you John should iaveTearned
long before this that your most fool-
ish foolishness Is to act the way you
do when you feel like criticising your
wife as a housekeeper If you really
desire better conditions and a happy
home instead of tears and divorce
proceedings there Is a better way
It has been your custom you know
when you saw dust on the center ta-
ble to quietly and not unostentatious-
ly -stick your forefinger into It then
look at the finger with an air of pa-
tient martyrdom wipe It carefully on
your handkerchief and then use the
handkerchief as a dust rag When
you have accidentally discovered that
sweepings have been left under the
davenport you have without comment
and almost secretively gotten the
dust pan and broom and swept up the
litter giving Mrs John only the
barest hint of what you have been do-
ing by asking her what to do with the
panful of trash When you have come
home to a slipshod and unappetizing
dinner with accompaniment of spot-
ted napery you have merely been
moodily disagreeable really uncon-
scious of the look of holy resignation
you are wearing And all the while
when your wife has been sneaking
sway to sniff and sob out her indig-
nation and aggrlevement you have
flattered yourself with the unctuous
thought that less patient men would
have said withering things or wrangled
under such circumstances -
It would be much better John for
you to throw china and smash furni-
ture But this Is the best plan of all
If one of these annoyances turns up
tomorrow overlook It as entirely as 11
your wife were your employer’s wife
and you were dining with said employ-
er to talk over an Increase In your
salary Put on your society manner
Not only try to be gallant hut try to
he fascinating It will be hard for
you John but try Be as complimen-
tary aa you can without showing you
have something up your sleeve You
must he that way at least one whole
day before attempting to apply the
remedy
If the other annoyances come up
next day continue to play your part
You must not even whisper to your
Inner consciousness the sarcastic ex-
cuse that modern housewives are often
compelled to neglect household duties
of shopping paying calls shopping at-
tending bridge parties shopping going
to matinees or shopping At lunch
particularly be a paragon of gallantry
and thoughtful courtesy and take re-
luctant and affectionate leave of your
wife- before going back to the of-
floe i As soon as you get back to the of-
fice send her this note by messenger:
1 Dear Trlx: The home atmosphere
ao took possession of me at lunch that
I forgot all about the office and In-
cidentally about Tumpklns You
know the Tumpklnses poor things
haven’t any perfect home life like oure
—they board ' Poor old Tump was
complaining about their miserable
condition today and I felt so sorry
for ’em I wanted to give ’em a real
treat In a homey home like ours with
one of those Jolly little dinners you
are so good at getting up eo I invited
’em out for this evening Sorry 1
forgot to tell you before dearest but
I know my little owney own will fix
things Just right Your loving— Jack
You will go home early that night
and when you open your door you will
think you have gotten into the wrong
house It will be the brightest cozl-
' most orderly house you ever saw
1 will find your wife In the kitchen
I ‘ Oh dearie" you must exclaim
"everything la beautiful exquisite
perfect! But you shouldn't have
gone to eo much trouble for juet the
Tumps"
! "Why John” she will say “don’t
You know Mrs T is the spiteful-
eat most critical old cat In the
world t"
i Continue to be exclamatory enthusi-
astic until the Tumpees arrive By
that time Mrs John wlU be flushed
with pleasure and look unusually
pretty
For a week after thla event you can
keep telling her how proud you were
and the flattering things Tumps said
up at the office And you must be
appreciatively complimentary of her
efforts to follow up thla auccesa Then
by the time the Tumpldnaes or other
friends have dined with you five
times you will be able to tell Mre
John In all sincerity how happy It
makes you to know you can Invite a
friend home at any time without any
warning knowing he will find a well-
ordered house and a good though elm-
pie dinner

A Safe Set
The email boy came home at night
and claimed hla father’s attention
"Dad" he said "I made a lection
hot yesterday— a real bet — with John-
nie Morris”
Papa shook hie head reprovingly
hut was Inwardly delighted at thla evi-
dence of sporting blood
"How much did you betf” he de-
manded "I bet a nickel on Harding”
“Why then you loat?”
”1 know It But I don’t care"
"Why don’t you careT”
The youngster grinned
” 'Cause I ain’t goln' to pay till
Johnnie aska me for it— an’ he don’t
dast ask me ’cause he knows I’ll
knock the etuffina out of him If he
does!"
