last year to one of sheriff Jackson s
deputies, hunted up the receipt and
came in to see what was the matter.
His receipt reads as follows:
June 15, 1894.
Keceived of Herbert Lesperence
$14.07 in full satisfaction of tax war-
rant No. 848. Amount of taxes flt.53.
Penalty $1.29. Treasurer's fee 2"> cents.
Sheriff's fee 90. Total *11.07.
Signed, T. TI. jackson,
Sheriff,
By E. L. Gay, Deputy.
Mr. Lesperance examined the rccords
at the treasurers office and found that
the amount paid to the sheriff had not
been turned over, and as a consequence
more penalty was added, making
a total of *17.tM). He took his receipt
to Mr. Gay, who is now deputy post-
master. and demanded of him to know-
why the money had not been turned
over to the treasurer. Mr. (lay could
not tell but said Mr. Lesperence should
lose nothing by it and went down in
the drawer and gave him $17.< o and
told him to go down and pay his taxes.
We have heard of a number of just
such cases, and advise the people to
hunt up their tax receipts for last year,
especially those who paid their taxes
either to the sheriff or his deputies.

For some time past this paper has
called attention to extravagance and
official corruption in the management
of the affairs of the city. It has been
apparant to most every one that there
is no excuse whatever for the town run
ning into debt to the alarming extent
it has in view of the vast sums of mon-
ey that has been collected in the form
of revenue from one source and anoth-
er. Little by little the evidence begin
to accumulate showing that there was
a good sized leak in the tire depart-
ment as well as elsewhere. Finally
the attention of Alderman Gerrer was
called to the fact that there was some-
thing "Kotten in Denmark," and he
and others began quietly to ferret the
matter out. It was discovered that
the secretary of the tire department
one S. A. Streams was in the habit of
buying supplies of one kind and anoth-
er for the city wherin large discount
were given in some instances as high
as 15 or 20 per cent, and that instead
of turning in a bill for the net amount
paid he would turn in a bill for the
gross amount and pocket the discount
This was true of ",00 feet of hose, of
the new bell of the gum coats, helmotf
and boots of the tire department, in
fact almost everything that has been
purchased for ihe fire department foi
the past year or so. aggregating hun
drc ds of dollars. The council went in
to executive session and called the of
fending Stream and also the chief of
the lire department, T. E. Qowell. and
Ihey were confronted with the charges
Both gentlemen admitted that they
had been speculating off of the people
of the town, in making purchases, and
that they had accepted "rake offs on
the side, but attempted,to justify them-
selves by citing numerous precidents.
They seem to think it was legimate to
accept a rake off from 1 •"> to 20 per cent
on purchases they made of supplies
for their department it seems that
Stream, the secretary, who is more
reprehensible than any one else, at
first attempted to deny taking "rake
offs" on the side, but when confronted
with the proof acknowledged "the
corn."
The council demanded the resign"-

Hello, Oglesby,
B-b-hullyy
how did you feel?
One night when Mi*. Isaac Roese was
stopping with me. says M. F. Hatch, a
prominent merchant of Quartermaster,
Washington, I heard him groaning.
On going to his room I found him
suffering from cramp colic. He was
in such agony 1 feared he would die.
I hastily gave him a dose of Chamber-
lain's Colic, Cholera and Diarrhoea
Remedy. He was soon relieved and
the first words he uttered were, "what
was that stuff you gave me?" I in-
formed him. A few days ago we were
talking about his attack and he said he
was never without that remedy now.
1 have used it in my family for several
years. 1 know its worth and do not
hesitate to recommend it to my friends
