Chairman Hays of the Republican

statement that the war can only be
won by the Republicans so frequent-

to suspect that he has worked him-

It must be conceded that the Re-

Atuercan army and the men of the
Aiuetican navy without mentioning

No doubt President Wilson when
he asked the country to adjourn poi-
it ics during the war was prompted j
by the highest consideration ot pa-
triotism and the rank and file of
both political parties recognized thc
wisdom of the appeal and voiced
their approval of his attitude. It
was hoped that party leaders would
unreservedly make similar response.
Regrctable this has not been true
as to some of thc party leaders for
upon several occasions they have
injected needless partisan discussion
into the consideration of measures
that should have been discussed
from a purely nonpartisan stand-
point. Ratifications of the federal probi-

will come thick and fast next year!

NATIONAL HOUSECLEANING
By Abbie Farvvell Brown
of The Vigilantes
Come ! Let's set the house in order
And make each corner fair!
The boys who build a brand-new
peace
Ask us to do our share.
We must sweep it clean and tidy
Of all the rot and rust
That has gathered here for ages;
They must find no dirt nor dust.
We will fumigate the cellar
And scour the mouldy walls.
And scrub with soap and honesty
' The chambers and the halls.
Let's chuck the junk and rubbish
The old unwholesome stuff
Race-prejudice and snobbery.
And cant and greet and guff.
Away with party jealousy!
Away with boss and clique!
With selfishness ami privilege
Hypcrisy and cheek.
Let's decorate with industry.
And thrift and skill and health;
And burn that tawdry motto
"True Happiness is Wealth."
Set thc nation's house in order.
And keep it so with pride;
Ready for heroes marching home
Worthy of those who died.
