WHERE ARE TOMORROW S TEACHERS?
Annually. several thousands of youngsters swell the ranks
of ludents. Already, there is a critical shortage of classroom
spc.ee and teachers to man the class, ooms.
This week's personality is Nancy, a littl' girl who wants
to become a teacher. She s se o'u about her de.iri. although
no) many of her clessmutos I- el the same inclination.
Yes. she's very serioi. • and i.i seeking way3 and means
whereby she will be to become a qualified teacher for
tor-arrow's horde of schV.-.is Wi.hirg and dreamin-. will not
make it so. she knows, but that seems to be about the extent of
the'fulfilment of her dreams.
Nancy lives in a community where schooling is sadly
nr 'lee ted. The adult population finds more interesting things
w th which to occupy their rrinds. such a. tho rising o-t of
living. Sputnik, and the World Senes. The schools are left
to b. teachers and the school board, whe r< ally aren't very
enthusiastic.
Now. this isn’t a pretty picture for a little girl, and it’s no
wr « that her dreams of improv.ng 'he situation r« 'urn with
more and more frequency. Her mo'hi't knows if her ambition
anc. has made plans with her sixth giacle teacher to further
he training as much as possible. Sh > is a widow and moral
sumiort is about all she has to give her daughter, but she. too.
keeps hoping.
Everyone is the community—the faimors bankers carpen-
ters. construction workers, stenographer! and homemakers, to
na -ie a few—must faco up to their responsibihnes and demand
adequate housing for the students, provide the best possible in
personnel and see that tomorrow's students will have good
teachers.
The problem of school buildings was attacked in the Sept,
is ue of THE READER'S DIGEST and some very interesting
figures are cited. They compare the cost of school buildings
in some areas to ones built at from one-third to one-half their
coi in other sections ol the country. Reprints of this article are
available through this newspaper at a cost of 3c each.
buildings are only one phase of the overcrowded condition
ot our schools. Hiring and retaining good teachers is just as
essential. The spirit oi the community toward the teachers will
determine whether they remain or soon begin looking for
another school or new employment.
Are you making your community's teachers feel they are
Very Important Persons, or do you even know them? Have
you attended any meetings oi the PTA or actively supported
the activities of the school? It not. this week is a good time to
visit your school, or one of the teachers, and learn where your
special talents are moet needed.
Learn who Nancy is in your community and whether or not
there are two or three others in her class who share her visions
oi one day presiding over a classroom. The price of an educa-
tion comes high, but not nearly so high as some people might
imagine and dollar-for-doUar it is the best buy in the market
WE MUST HAVE FIRST-RATE SCHOOLS all across our
land, so that Nancy and her brother, and their cousins, may all
receive the training they so richly deserve. They are willing
and anxious to do their part. Are we doing ours?
Next week s editorial attacks the problems Tommy faces in
his fight to become a doctor.
