and Mr. Bryan talked to young men wlio were fit, in mo^l respects
to weigh what he said. , .
Students of the sociological department were questioned in
advance to the lecture as to their ideas 1 wo students rejer te
the doctrine completely: five believed that there was not sutli
cient proof to demonstrate the theory conclusively; seven were
undecided fifty two believed that evidence favored the theory,
and seventy accepted the theory in toto. I erts made after the
talk showed that twenty-eight of the 136 students had changed
their minds or were weighing the subject an* w.
In substance, the lecture did not completely change any view
It simply caused a general discussion among the students of the
theory of evolution.. Oratory is not so effective among thinkers as
among those who are moved l>y emotion.
UNDERSTANDING l.ARGF. PROBLEMS
Mr. Arthur H. Carver, head of the training division of the
industrial relations department of Swift & Co., holds that com-
mercial training or teaching is loo technical. 1 he basic principles
of economics are not taught as thoroughly as ihey should he.
" I he present generation of students has a distorted idea ot
the basic principles of economics." he says. '"Without consciously i
intending it. or being particularly aware of it. it is socialistic m
its attitude toward the capitalist and employer. It starts its
career with the fixed expectation of being exploited, and. conse-
quently. with something of a chip on its shoulder.
Whether Mr. Carver's inference is well taken or not, the tact
is apparent that business men and their employes must master
economics in order to succeed in their endeavors I he big prob-
lems of the time, whether they seem to be social or political, arc.
at bottom, economic. If we am the fundamentals of economics
and how these principles operate, the big problems will be simpH-,
tied. Ah to buHineftH, we must be lamiliar with its rules, in
days to prosper in it.
