Good Overcoming EvU
Philippians 4:11-13 "Not
that I speak in regard to need,
for I have learned in whatev-
er state I am, to be content: I
can do all things through
Christ who strengthens me.”
NKJV
Life events are some-
times horrific! A
Connecticut family was rav-
aged by crime in 2007. Dr.
William Petit, Jr., though
brutally beaten, was the only
survivor. Murdered during
the crime were his wife and
two daughters.
Recently, Dr. Petit spoke
with reporters after the ver-
dict (guilty 16 counts). He
humbly expressed,"... faith
in God that justice would be
served. We really thank the
jury for their due diligence
and careful consideration of
the charges in reaching what
we feel is an appropriate ver-
dict. What matters to me are
memories of my family... to
focus myself on good over-
coming evil and ...to work in
our foundation so good, will
overcome evil.”
I heard similar astounding
words spoken by grieving
family members in another
case which I wrote about in
Sept. 2008 in an article about
Kelsey Smith.
Kelsey was a young
woman who had been mur-
dered. Her parents and fiance
had astonishingly forgiven
the murderer upon his arrest,
shortly after her body was
found, explaining “We will
not let him steal anything else
from us.”
Dr. Petit, like Kelsey’s
family, though sickened by
the pain of grief, still chose
his focus rather than allowing
Janell Sanny, LPC
From the
Counselor’s Desk
the criminals to choose the
focus of life for him. He
chose to focus on memories
of love shared with his fami-
ly. He also chose to focus on
the goodness of the founda-
tion instituted in the memory
of his lost loved ones. His
goal was to focus on good
prevailing over evil. The
Smiths also established a
foundation in Kelsey’s name
for the same noble reasons.
What can we learn from
their example for our diffi-
cult. trying, or even horrible
moments in life? Our verses
for today tell us:
a) We can be content in
"whatever state”.
b) We can do “all things”,
complete through Him.
How do we accomplished
these things? We have con-
tentment and completeness
when we have total trust in
God and have total reliance
on Him. This is true no mat-
ter the circumstances that
touch our lives. Grace pre-
vails.
Job experienced horrific
circumstances. God did not
cause his situations, but
allowed them and worked
them for his good We can be
assured He will work them
for our good too.
We find in Romans 8:28,
“And we know that all things
work together for good to
those who love God, to those
who are the called according
to His purpose.” We arc
assured this is true in our
lives, as much loved children
of God. We must deal with
the reality that what we face
in life is our life.
Theologian Dallas Willard
states, “You are not separate
from your life, and in that life
you must find the goodness
of God. Otherwise, you will
not believe that he has done
well by you and you will not
truly be at peace with him.
But if we have suffered terri-
bly. we must choose not to let
that be our life focus. We
must, if we can. focus on
God. God’s world, and our-
selves as included in it w ith a
glorious destiny of our own.”
We choose our focus. We
must be like l)r. Petit and
choose - “Good Overcoming
Evil”.
Janell Sannx is a masters
level, licensed professional
counselor, who is in private
practice in Sapulpa. Sht may
