Construction begins on county multiplex

Construction on the new multi-
plex at the Creek County
Fairgrounds has begun with the
pouring of the foundation and
erection of the event building
scheduled for this week.
The construction of the multi-
plex has been divided into four
phases, with the addition of the
225-by-76 foot building being
phase one.
Serveral local businesses have
donated materials to the project,
and the fair board has made sure
to use local builders and materials
whenever possible.
“It's important to us to keep the
tax payers’ dollars in Creek
County," Said Creek County Fair
Board President Josh Enlow.
The fair board believes that the
addition of this multiplex will be
extremely important to Creek
County, and will bring sanctioned
horse shows, trade shows and a
variety of activities to the fair-
grounds.
"This facility is far overdue for
Creek County, and 1 see it as a
much-needed piece to the puzzle
at the Creek County Fairgrounds,"
said District No. 2 County
Commissioner Johnny Burke last
summer when plans for the multi-
plex were first announced.
Enlow hopes that the building
will be complete by July 1, in
plenty of time for the fall fair.
The next phase in the building
process will be the installation of
50 horse stalls that will be key in
bringing large equestrian events to
the fairgrounds.
Lifetime advertising is current-
ly being offered to local business-
es who would like to have their
business names permanently
branded into the wood of the stalls
with branding irons.
Several organizations have
contacted the fairgrounds to hold
events in the new multiplex, but
no final schedule will be made
until the horse stalls have been
completed.
In the meantime, members of
the fair board have been busy
preparing the fairgrounds for visi-
tors.
“We just put up several new
R.V. hook-ups and new
pedestals," Enlow said. “That
brings our total to around 25
hook-ups.”
No doubt the multiplex will
bring in additional visitors to the
fairgrounds this summer and with
them added revenue for Creek
County.
Along with the 60 by 70 foot
horse arena and horse stalls, the
multiplex will include wash racks,
office space, restroom facilities
and concession areas.

summer travelers with a place to stay

activities that the multiplex should
bring to the county.

Lawmakers call for accurate count of immigrants
TULSA, Okla. (AP) — Key
members of Oklahoma’s congres-
sional delegation said they
jumped into an ongoing debate
over Tulsa police procedures on
immigration because they want
federal officials to get accurate
figures on how many illegal immi-
grant* are in the area.
Rep. John Sullivan also
expressed hope that a meeting
with U.S. Immigration and
Customs Enforcement officials
will address fears about an expan-
sion of police procedures and help
land an ICE pres-
ence in Tulsa.
Sullivan and
U.S. Sens. Jim
Inhofe and Tom
Coburn, all
Republicans,
weighed in on the
debate by sending
a May 24 letter to
the Tulsa City
Council as it pre-
pared to vote on a
nonbinding resolu-
tion to have local
police check the
immigration status
of those arrested
for felonies and
misdemeanors.
It is unusual for
members of
Congress to
become so
involved in a local
issue, especially
one that requires a
vote.
In their letter.
Sullivan. Inhofe
and Coburn urged the council to
adopt a proposal to allow police to
ask for proof of citizenship “on all
suspected illegal aliens" encoun-
tered by officers in the course of
their regular duties
Sullivan said the lawmakers
took the unusual step of writing a
letter to the council because a
strong message needed to be sent.
"To get the resources that the
mayor says she wants to get for
local law enforcement, we have to
ha\e an accurate portrayal of what
is going on in Tulsa." he said.
