"1 had grown up doing
improvisation, but not in die
jazz context. But then I met
Tommy Crook and other
musicians and started listen-
ing to their music and
jammed with them.” he said.
"Then I really started getting
into the jazz scene in Tulsa.”
Not only did Ryan join the
Tulsa jazz scene, but he is
now an integral part of it, as
well as a noted musician on
an international level. Ryan
has taken the stage in
England. France. Germany,
Austria. Poland, Spain.
Switzerland and the
Caribbean and has play with
music greats such as Henry
Mancini. Ralph Carmichael.
Eddie Daniels, Steve
Wilkerson. Diahnn Carroll.
Eileen Farrell. Leona
Mitchell and Simon Estes.
His latest accomplish-
ment. however, was his recent
induction into the Oklahoma
Jazz HallofFameonJune21.
"When I heard about it, I
said. 'Are you guys certain
you want to do this?*” Ryan
remembered. “It was really a
terrific honor, and I am so
humbled that they honored
me with it (the induction).”
Ryan's next performance
will find him in what has
become his hometown at the
4th Annual Sapulpa Royal
Jazz Festival running July 27-
29. where he will be playing
with a group of several local
musicians, including his son.
The group includes Kathy
Wolfe on vocals, Gary Lindy
oo saxophone and clarinet,
Jim Bates on bass and Ryan's
son Barron Ryan on drums.
These are the people I
first call when I need a
group.” he said. They are tal-
ented musicians in their own
right, but they’re also neat
people to work with, and
that's important.”
Most of this group Ryan
has known for years, from his
jamming days in college to
stints as a student teacher at
Edison High School in Tulsa
Ryan is also excited to be
working with his son, whom
he calls a great musician.
“We play together often —
or as often as I can get him. '
Ryan said.
Barron Ryan is currently a
sophomore at the University
of Oklahoma where he is
studying piano and working
on his own music career.
And while Ryan may have
been playing for decades, his
love of music has remained
strong. Although he doesn't
consider himself exclusively
a jazz musician, he also has
strong roots in classical, pop
and ragtime music, jazz has a
special place in his heart.
“What I love about jazz is
that you're expected to put a
personal stamp on the music.”
Ryan said. "You can play
around with it. at least that’s
the type of jazz I prefer. A
few years ago I decided my
jazz would be more blues
based, and I like to hark back
to more classic jazz ”
Ryan currently has two
CDs out on the Protdgd
Label. "Raising the
Standards" and “The
Sweetest Sounds.”
Ryan and his group will
be one of five bands playing
at the jazz festival on Friday
night, taking the suge at
around 9:15.
The festival will begin on
July 27 at Martha s Comer,
then move to Liberty Park for
the July 28-29 performances.
All proceeds made at the fes-
tival through concessions will
go toward the Sapulpa High
School Band Program.
Another local musician
performing at the festival will
be Cory Reynolds, who is a
member of the Rusty Hall
Band.
