Matthau
has power
to attract
HOLLYWOOD (UPI) -
Walter Matthau, whose
beady eyes look suspiciously
out on the world from a
bloodhound's face, padded
into the 20th Century-Kox
commissary in his pajamas
for lunch, muttering about
his career.
In a day and age when the
average moviegoer is
between the ages of 15 and
35, Walter is one of the few
major movie stars with tht
power to pull adults awa\
from their television sets am
into movie theaters.
He recognizes his appeal l
all age groups but wonderer
if he might fall viclm to th<
over-exposure sjndrome b>
appearing or. screen too
often
In the past 12 months,
Walter has completed a trio
of films, ' First Monday In
October — currently in
theaters — “Buddy Buddy’'
with Jack Lt-nrii n, and "1
Ought To Be In Pictures”
with AmvMarg. *'t.
Hardly a yea. goes by
without at least t vt Matthau
films doing brisk business in
theaters. Walter Ends his
success at once a sou-ce of
satisfaction and a cause foi
concern.
He grimaced charac
teristically, the folds of his
face resembling a relief map
of the Rocky Mountains His
eyes almost disappeared.
“There’s a danger in being
seen too much,” he said
mournfully.
“But when you work as
much as I do it gives you the
opportunity to see how
differently you can play each
part. There's thousands of
roles in me and thousands of
different ways to play them.
"To me, each character I
play ’s a different person.
Sure, it’s always Walter
Matthau being someone else.
But I think I’m objective
enough to know that I play
each character with no
reference to the others I’ve
done.
“In my last three pictures
the characters don't even
look like like me that much
Physically there isn’t a
strong resemblance.
“In Buddy Buddy' I play a
Mafia hit man with my hair
slicked down. He's a real
nervous, tense kind of guy
My gait is different, too. I
walk with the precision of a
soldier.
“As the Supreme Court
justice in ‘First Monday,’ 1
wear my hair differently
with a lot of gray in it 1 wear
glasses and my speech is
midwest. He’s emphatic and
cynical.
“I play an unemployed
writer with a beard in ‘1
Ought To Be in Pictures.'
This black beard gives me
another appearance
altogether.”
No matter how he alters
his appearance, the Matthau
kisser remains one of the
most unique on the screen
His shuffling, lame bear
walk, too, remains distinc-
tive, recognizable from the
rear at 100 paces.
His body language and
mobile face clearly are Mat-
thau’s no matter who he
plays. But Walter likes to
think he is never the same
man twice on screen
“I’m always aware I’m
acting," he said. “Maybe for
a split second in a scene. I’m
not. Maybe in a whole pic-
ture there will be three or
four seconds when I’ve gone
into another land.
“As far as I’m concerned,
an actor has to be aware he's
an actor acting, or he’ll wind
up in a funny farm.
“It’s important that you
get all the externals you can
muster, the look, the man-
nerisms, the makeup, hair
style, wardrobe and all that
But the internals amount to
fractions of seconds when
you become the character
“The longer you act, the
more control you have over
those internals. When you’re
young, you’re more apt to
lose control by letting the
character take over."
Walter was interrupted by
the appearance of his 18-
year-old son Charlie, who is
working with Neil Simon's
company, which is
producing “I Ought to Be In
Pictures.”
“But when this picture is
over I’m getting into a boat.
I'll head out into the Pacific
with a fishing pole and I
don’t know when I’ll be
back.”
