A key loss H«-im».b,BoesHErm,iL
Sapulpa's leading rusher Steve Bilby is helped oft the field after
suffering a knee injury in the first quarter Friday night. Muskogee
took advantage of the Chieftains’ loss and defeated Sapulpa
42-21.

The biggest key to seventh-ranked
Sapulpa's ride to the playoffs was the
ability to remain injury-free.
Unfortunately for the Chieftains,
that came to an end in the first quarter
Friday night against No. 9 Muskogee
at Collins Stadium.
The Chieftains' leading rusher
Steve Bilby left the game with a severe
knee injury and the Roughers took
advantage of his absence in the secon-
dary on a 53 -yard pass play to tight end
Jason Freeman that gave Muskogee a
14-7 advantage early in the second
quarter.
In the second half, Freeman scored
again on a 75-yard pass, while running
back Seth Littrell added three TDs cn
route to a 42-21 victory, ending the
Chieftains’ historic season at 8-3.
After Sapulpa’s first possession,
there was the possibility the game
could turn into a wild affair. And
indeed it was.
Both teams turned the ball over five
times, and fans were treated to over
800 yards of total offense.
When the Chieftains took over at
their 6-yard line, quarterback Derrick
Walters aired it out to Bobby Camp-
bell for 43 yards down the sideline.
Two plays later, Walters went deep
again for the 48-yard TD pass to
Campbell and a 7-0 Sapulpa lead with
7:56 left in the first quarter.
Campbell would finish the game
with eight catches for 212 yards and
two touchdowns.
Muskogee answered right back on
Marquis Chaplin’s 40-yard TD run to
tie the game.
The Chieftains then mounted a
drive after Bilby returned the ensuing
kick-off to the 50-yard line. Behind the
running of Bilby and Darrell Stockton,
and two catches by Eric Byard, Sapul-
pa moved inside the Muskogee 10.
On third down, Bilby attempted to
go up the middle, but was dropped for
no gain. Bilby, however, suffered his
injury on the play and did not return.
On fourth-and-onc from the 8,
Sapulpa failed to convert and Musko-
gee took over.
After Freeman’s first TD made it
14-7, Byard intercepted a juggled
catch, and Walters, who finished
13-for-26 and 264 yards, went to
work. He connected on passes of 19,
16 and 15 to Campbell.
In between those three catches was
another attempt to Campbell that
could have been called pass interfer-
ence. The flag was not thrown.
Sapulpa could not convert the
fourth-and-eight situation, and
Muskogee took over once again.
Littrell then fumbled and linebacker
Wes Galloway appeared lo recover the
ball at the Chieftain 49. Two plays
later, the Chieftains gave the ball hack
via the fumble.
In the second half, the Roughers
reeled off three touchdowns on their
first three possessions to extend the
lead 35-7.
But Sapulpa refused to fold.
Stockton, who filled in for Bilby at
tailback with 15 carries for 92 yards,
had runs of 15 and 13, while Byard
continued the drive with catches of 30
and 8.
The game then took another wild
turn.
An interception would end the
Golden Eagles eliminated at home by Wyandotte

MOUNDS — When the Mounds
High School football coaches look back
at Friday night’s 19-6 loss to Wyandotte
in the opening round of the playoffs, they
will probably mention missed
opportunities.
And that was the case for the Golden
Eagles.
The Mounds defense recovered four
fumbles, but the offense could only turn
one of them into a touchdown.
After a punt by Ferrell Blackbcar, the
Mounds coverage team recovered the
muffed catch at the Wyandotte 24-yard
line.
After an incomplction, quarterback
Josh Gchring connected with Jake
Rowland for a touchdown that cut the
lead to 13-7 with 16 seconds remaining
in the first half.
The visiting Bears opened the game's
scoring on a fumble returned for the
touchdown.
After Rowland gave the Eagles good
field position with a kick-off return to
the 44, Mounds went with the running of
Tyrone Roberson to the Wyandotte 10.
But an interception in the end zone gave
the ball back to the Bears.
Wyandotte then went 80 yards in
seven plays to take a 13-0 lead.
The Golden Eagles went for the
onsidc kick after Rowland's TD and
Bratton recovered the ball to set up a
hail-mary situation.
The Wyandotte defense, however,
flushed Gchring from the pocket and
time expired. a
The Bears opened the third quarter
with a nine-play, 61-yard drive to give
them a 19-6 lead after Mounds blocked
the PAT.
Late in the third quarter. Daniel Bern-
hardt recovered a bad snap on a Wyan-
dotte punt attempt at the Bear 7-yard
line.
Mounds moved the ball to the 1 before
jumping offsides on third down. After
two incompletions, the Bears took over
on downs.
Gchring was 6-of-U passing for 108
yards. Mounds' leading receiver Jimmy
Cloutier hauled in three catches for 88
yards, while Rowland made two recep-
tions. Jason Foster accounted for the
other completion.
Sapulpa drive, but lineman Steve
Williams recovered a fumble on the
next play. The Chieftains, in turn,
fumbled right back. On Muskogee’s
first play from scrimmage, Frank
Howell recovered a fumble and Sapul-
pa took over at the Roughers’ 14-yard
line after a penalty.
Stockton scored on a three-yard run,
culling the lead to 35-13 with 8:27 left
in the game.
The Sapulpa defense, in particular
Williams, decided to make some
noise. Williams broke through the
Muskogee line and warmed up for
wrestling season with a body-slam
