Standing goalposts sure sign
of how far K-State has come
MANHATTAN, Kan (AP) _
Those two muci goalposts were per-
haps the surest sign that Kansas State
has hit college football s big tune
After the seventh-ranked Wildcats
handed Oklahoma (5-3-1 overall 2-3
Big Eight) its most one-sided loss in
half a century, the crowd did not come
pouring onto the field to rip then
down.
The same fans who embarrassed
themselves a couple of years ago by
demolishing the goalposts after beat-
ing, of all people. Iowa Stale, rrinpli
filed out of KSU Stadium, secure ■
the knowledge that they had whipped
the once-mightv Sooners three
straight years and were death the

me to criticize anything they do."

his players in a rare Sunday morning
practice.

-It s obvious that this game today
was a low pool in onr straggle to
revive this program. This was the
wont physical beating any team I’ve
ever been associated with has taken.
And one of the wont. I expect, that
Oklahoma has been involved with —
I don't know — ever”
The Sooner*, whose 32-vcar vu-
1930s to the 1960s is still an NCAA
record, were called for 13 of the
game s 17 penatoes. and 102 of the
game's 131 penalty yards.
‘I'm verv embarrassed, for the pro-
gram aid for Oklahoma.' said Okla-
homa split cad Jaluan Benny. “This
was worse than the (45-7) loss a Col-
orado last year. I thought that was a
big loss, bm this ts much worse.'
Kansas State 's Man Miller is just
one touchdown pass from tying the
Big Eight record of 20 in a season by
Nebraska 's Vince Ferragamo in 1976.
and the team is two victories away
from possMy capturing its first-ever
Jan. I bowl bid.
Miller ran for two touchdowns
against the Sooner*. who are 0-12-1 in
then last 13 games against ranked
opponents. He was nearly perfect
through the air. hitting 20 of 25 for
273 yards and three touchdowns.
His 19 scoring passes wiped out the
school record of 18 by Chad May.
”1 think this was probably my best
game.' said Miller, who backed up
May last year after transferring from
Texas AANI and will have only this
one season to compete ‘I didn't throw
any interceptions and I didn't make
any bad decisions today. The offen-
sive fine did a great job. They were
dominating and gave me a lot of time
to do some things.
"We rt a very confident team right
now,' Miller added. “And we deserve
our rankings very much."
Catching eight passes for 117 yards
was Tulsa. Okla.. native Kevin Lock-
ett. The 6-foot. 175-pounder grew up
idolizing Oklahoma football but was
snubbed by the Sooners because they
thought he was too small. His 8-yard
TD catch in the second quarter
extended his school record to 12.
“Kevin gets up for every game But
I'm sure he gets up for Oklahoma just
a link bit more,” Miller said.

Pokes in right direction
STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) —
Oklahoma State wasn’t able to give
Bob Simmons a victory over his for-
mer team. The Cowboys were able to
make their coach proud, however.
Simmons saw the Cowboys play
their best all-around game of the year
Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to stop
No. 9 Colorado. The Buffaloes,
behind five touchdown passes by John
Hcssler, scored three times in the
fourth quarter to win 45-32.
“We had a great offensive plan,”
Simmons said. “For the first time in a
long time we were balanced in terms
of running and throwing the ball. Our
kids really stepped up and made
plays.”
That was important to Simmons,
who spent seven years as a Colorado
assistant coach. He went after the job
vacated last season by Bill McCart-
ney, but that went to Rick Neuheisel
and Simmons then got hired by Okla-
homa State.
“This team played hard. This team
played REAL hard,” Simmons said.
“These kids hugged me after the game
and said, 'I'm sorry,’ but I told them
there was nothing for them to be sorry
for.
“To score 32 points on that kind of
team, I like the direction we’re going
with this program.”
The Cowboys (2-7 overall, 1-4 Big
Eight) scored on their first possession
and, after Colorado countered with
two straight touchdowns, they came
right back to Ik the score.
It was 17-17 at halftime and 24*24
after three quarters. The Buffaloes (7-
2, 3-2) seemed able to score about
anytime they wanted, but through
three quarters the Cowboys did as
well.
“Unfortunately, sometimes it takes
being on the brink of disaster before
we can get jump started,” Neuheisel
said.
Hesskr and his teammates, who
had lost two out of three and seen their
Big Eight title hopes evaporate, made
sure there would be no disaster.
Hcssler capped a 14-play, 7 1/2-
minute drive with a 5-yard touchdown
pass to Phil Savoy four minutes into
the fourth quarter. That would prove
to give the Buffaloes the lead for
good, 31-24.
Oklahoma State started going right
back down the field, but the drive was
killed by a holding penalty. The flag
nullified a first-down completion that
would have given the Cowboys the
ball at midfield. Instead, they were
forced to punt.
Then Hcssler delivered the knock-
out punch. On first down from the 23,
he found Rac Carruth down the mid-
dle on a post pattern. Carruth caught
the perfectly thrown pass in stride and
outran his man to the end zone.
The 77-yard play was Colorado’s
longest for a touchdown in two years.
