ELSIE FERGUSON
One of the most beautiful of all ex-
ponents of the true dramatic art Elsie
Ferguson the popular staKe star now
appears before more people in one
nlKht than she heretofore entertained
In several months. The answer Is mo-
tion pictures and this is one of the
chief reasons why artists of the
spoken drama give up their theatrical
careers for the cinema. The demand
for the talents of such celebrities as
Elsie Ferguson could never be ful-
filled were it not for the scope of the
motion picture. Where previously It
took her an entire sexisnn to tour only
the large cities of the country it now
takes her approximately one month to
reach every tovr and hamlet in not
only this but other countries. Miss
Ferguson's first photoplay. "Barbary
Sheep" just released by Artcraft Pic-
tures is rrnwtlng with public favor
everywhere and thru the power of
trie screen she has already entertained
twice as many people In a few weeks
m the number she appeared before

Kor subtlety of direction and per-
fertlon f stagecraft Utill Kane's
new Mutual-American feature drama
"Souls In Pawn" Is a triumph par ex.
cellence of photoplay development.
Nothing could be more tanking then
the finished ease with which highly
dramatic sltutaions are produced these
situations bring In every Instance due
to logical development of the story.
In no one of the five-reels Is there a
forced or unnatural climax.
.Miss Kano's acting Is of the very
highest type and so Is that of Douglas
MacLean a brilliant young actor
whose ability haa never been more
thoroly demonstrated than In "Souls
In Pawn."
Miss Kane succeeds In carrying con-
vlcltlon by her superb characterisation
of the young Parlsienne matron who
Is determined to avenge her husband's
murder and who falls under the sway
of the foreign secret service In the
course of her search for avldenoe
against the unknown assassin. The
part Is one that calls for great artistic
reserve rv.nd contrasting heights of
emotional feeling. Miss Kane never
overdoes or underdoes any of the great
scenes In the play.
Robert Klein who doubles the parts
of Baron Arnold von Pollnlts and The
C'omte also 'does most praiseworthy
acting In a succession of sltuatluns
which might easily have ben exag-
cornea gcnitrd to the detriment gof the gen-
eral excellence of the production.
