Farmers living on the west side of
the Arkansas river a few miles north
of Arkansas City, will soon begin the
construction of dykes along the
river to stop the overflow which
takes place with every rise. The
dykes will direct the waters to the
opposite side of the river bed and
will force the city to build dykes
on the east to prevent an overflow
there. The work of the farmers will
save acres ot land. The Kansas
Southwestern railroad company,
whose tracks follow the west hank
above the city, will dig a canal to
carry off the water that backs upon
their right of way. This canal will
be half a mile long and will cost
several thousand dollars.—Wlnfleld
