A Word to the Good People of
Hennessey.
As I have never written any
tiling for the paper, t will give
you my opinion in regard to
bootleging and law breakers.
The man that .sells redeye in our
state is a law breaker, and from
that profession it leads t<> Rumb-
ling and 011 to pety theft and
then to burglary. And now we
call on the good people of Hen
nessey to wake up and drive the
bootlegers out of our city and
see that our young men are not, i
led to ruin and disgrace. 1 ;
would say to young men be care
ful and not indulge in the redeye
cup nor go to the canyon with
beer and whiskey and stay till
morning, for you would not
have liked to had .your mother,
sister, wife, daughter or sweet
heart to come to that canyon and
seen the horrible condition of
things there. And also be
cautious of the literature that is
circulated through our mail by
the redeye distilleries of the
East to entice you to spend your
money for that which is naught
and brings ruin to prosperity,
cluiract"!' and health. For those
men col e not for your prosperity,
character or health, but their
aim is to get your money re
gardless of principle.

of alaska was brought from

they contained a herd of fur-

When Alaska was ceded to the
United States the herd still
numbered millions. Today, be
cause of the killing of breeding
mother seals in the open ocean,
the fur seals number little more
than one hundred and fifty
thousand all told. The mother
seals have been slain and their

Champ Clark is out with a pre
diction that the next House of
Reuresentatives will be controll-
ed by the Democrats. As a
prophet Mr. Clark has not been
entirely unaccurate in the past.
He was certain Mr. Bryan would
be President and he was sure
that Mr. Cannon would never be
Speaker. If Mr. Clark happen
ed to be right this time we wond
er whether the House Democracy
would be controlled by his fol
lowers or the followers of Re pre
sentative Fitzgerald. It is well
to remember that while the Re
publicans in Congress are not
united on all things they are not
only whit farther apart then the
Democrats. There are many
who believe that Mr. Clark is
proving a district failure as
minorty leader. He is long on
epigrams and voice and short on
ability to weld his party associat
es into a compact tightirg ma
chine to harass the majority.
The fact that, under Mr. Clark's
leadership, the Democrats n
Congress failed to off- r any
practical substitute for the
Payne tariff bill but confined
their efforts to picking Haws in
tin Republican measure, is hard
Iv calculated to encourage their
efforts for a hold on popular fav
or. A minority party which is
merely a stumbling block in the
roadway ought not complain if
it rnn over. When Mr. Clark
is run over in the Congressional
elections a year hence we wi.l
not be surprised if he rises,
shakes off the dust and mud, and
boldly predicts that the House
will surely be Democratic in
li l:;.

The little island of St. Paul and
St. George, in the Bering Sea,
three hundred miles from the
nearest mainland of Alaska, are
for many years and it was not
until Elihu Root's master hand
began the direction of affairs
that the military branch of the
government was recognized and
made strong and efficient. When
Mr. Meyer took charge of the
Navy portfolio he attacked the
problems with deliberation and
ability. He was impressed with
the fundamental principle that
the efficiency of the floating navy
and its personnel must, after all,
be the chief end and aim of all
naval administration. Mr. Meyer
substituted the various problems
involved to special boards and
then referred the reports ofl
these boards to a general board
of which Rear Admiral Swift
was made chairman. Three im 1
1 portant ends are sought in the
pending reorganization. They
| are increased efficiency and j
economy in navy yard adminis-
tration, a redistribution of duties
in the Navy Department to obvi j
ate duplication of work, and, |
finally, t he 1 reation of an advisory ,
board which shall render compe '
tent techical advise to the civilian
Secretary of the Navy, instead
of leaving him at the mercy ofl
factional advisers and over en j
thusiastic theorists Until re
cent years interest int'-e Ameri-
can navy was con fined to the
coast states. The sea victories
of the Spanish war and the spec
tular "around-tlie world" trip of
tic tleet aroused a general popu
lar interest in our fighting men
of war. The great sums which
the American people are devoting
annually to the upbuilding of
their na\y entitles them to the
best possible administration.
Mr Meyer's efforts are deserv
ing ol commendation and it is
hoped that Congress will place
no obstacles in the way of Ins
well matured reorganiz l! ion
