Early Breeding To
Get Extra Calves
DIXON SPRINGS, 111 , Sept 29
—lift—Farmers can get an extra
calf out of the lifetime of a cow
by breeding beef heifers as year-
lings to calve at about two years
of age, experiments here have
shown
R J. Webb, superintendent of
the University of Illinois’ experi-
ment station here, said studies car-
ried on since 1943 showed it was
practical to breed beef heifers to
calve as two-year olds.
About 100 heifers were used in
the study. Half of them were first
bred as yearlings, the other half
as two-year-olds. Cows in each
group have been kept through 10
years of age.
Webb said the group bred as
yearlings has weaned an average
of six calves for each original
heifer. The group bred as two-
year-olds has weaned an average
Lost Wallet Does
Lot of Traveling
BROOKVILLE, Pa., Sept. 29—UT
—Mrs. G. Brent Doverspike of
New Bethlehem stopped here for
some ice cream one night. For-
getting she had laid her wallet on
the fender of her automobile while
waiting for change, she climbed
into the car and drove home, a
distance of some 20 miles.
Unable to locate the wallet, Mrs.
Doverspike telephoned the Brook-
ville American to place a lost ad
in the weekly newspaper.
Meanwhile, her son took the car
for another trip of 30 miles. The
next morning, Mrs. Doverspike
said, a passerby spotted the wallet
—still on the fender.
