Minnow Farmer
Finds It Pays
ARDMORE. Okl*., Jan. 10—(UJB
—J. D. Ray has learned that cast-
ing bread on the waters pays divi-
dends.
He’s making it a full-time busi-
ness on s 20-acre tract at Briar
Creek
Bay is a minnow farmer. He
buys stale bread at three cents a
loaf from Ardmore bakeries and
dumps it Into his three minnow
ponds.
He estimated that each pond
produces 800.000 minnows, each
worth one cent wholesale to local
bait dealers. That means a gross
Income of 818,000 annually.
Ray says It would take at least
25 other minnow growers to fill
the demand around Ardmore,
where Lake Murray draws an es-
timated 2,000,000 visitors and fish
ermen each year, and that the
business should be good almost
anywhere in the nation.
All you need, Ray says, is
minnow pond. His are six feet
deep, 100 feet long and 74 feet
wide.
He says the minnows spawn
eight times a year and have a
mortality rate of less than two per
cent.
