Five men were killed, consider-
able property damage was caused
and a number of seamen were
feared dead today ln a fire which '
swept a section of the Brooklyn
waterfront.
The blaze, touched off by a |
series of lightning-like explosions,
destroyed tiie Cuba Mall line
freighter Panuco and damaged a
1,000-foot Cuba mail line pier, an |
adjoining pier and several craft!
assisting in the unloading of a ]
highly inflammable cargo from the
Panuco.
Police Commissioner Lewis J. j
Valentine said he feared “many
more men or bodies" were aboard
the flaming Panuco which was
towed into the East river after
she caught fire.

He said 26 men were fished out
of the river, three of them dead
and 23 were taken to hospitals.
The federal bureau of investiga-
tion and Brooklyn officials began
Investigations of the possibility of
sabotage.
Valentine said he beileved the
fire started on the pier but the
fire department was unable to de-
termine the cause of the blaze or
estimate the damage. An adjoin-
ing pier has been used by ships
carrying supplies to the British.

marker in Chandler cemetery to-
day was Identified by relatives as
that of Billie Grayson, 18. of Yu-
kon.
Mrs. Gene Duncan, with whom
[he girl had been staying near
Warwick, said she and a neighbor
eirl, Helen Grandstaff, went to
Warwick last night starting home
about 11 p. m. Mrs. Duncan said
the two were picked up by a man
in an automobile.
The man and the slain girl
started .scuffling, she added, and
the neighbor girl, 12. jumped out
and ran to a nearby farm home
where she spent the night.
Officers immediately launched a
search for the man.
The Grayson girl's father Is Ed
Grayson of Stroud, Mrs. Duncan
said, adding that the gl-l’s mother
was believed to be working in Ok-
lahoma City.
Girl Apparently Strangled
The girl apparently was stran-
gled with a rope. The body was
found propped against a grave
marker in the cemetery.
Two hundred persons viewed her
body in an undertaking establish-
ment before Identification was es-
tablished
Buster Devins, cemetery care-
taker, made the gruesome ’discov-
ery of the body.
