Memphis Puts Lid
On Needless Noise
NEW YORK. June 7—<U.R>—Mem-
phis, Tenn., has earned a reputa-
tion as the nation's quietest city.
Hie reason was given in a report
to the National Noise Abatement
council by Claude A. Armour, com-
missioner ot fire and police.
In Memphis, police arrest noise
makers.
"Each complaint is Investigated
promptly and arrests are made
where warranted," Armour reported.
"A car driver who blows his horn
unnecessarily is fined $3.
“The people of Memphis, who have
teamed to appreciate the benefits
of noise abatement and are accus-
tomed to quiet, give full support by
prompt complaint to the police de-
partment of any unnecessary horn
blowing, loud radios, loud juke boxes
and similar nuisances."
The man who uses his horn in-
stead of the doorbell when picking
up passengers is out of luck
“In such cases, officers are de-
tailed t,o be on the lookout for this
particular offender and an arrest
for violation of the anti-noise ordi-
nance usually results," Armour said.
“In most cases, one arrest Is suf-
ficient.
“Where radios bre being played
too loudly, or where music from
other sources becomes disturbing to
the neighborhood, Investigations are
made and the instruments are or-
dered removed, or the owners se-
verely warned to comply with the
xxlinance against unnecessary noise.
“ABBA DABBA GIMME” — If opes talk that way, this Joy-
regislcring chimp would be saying “Holy Toledo! How long has
this been going on? More, more, give me more!” His excitement
resulted from his first taste of ice cream at the Cleveland, Ohio,
zoo, where he's a popular resident.
