BAIRD, Tex., Sept. 25.—</P— A
gunman battled employes of the
Baird la nk today, fled and was
captured bv Sheriff R. L. Edwards
C. V. Jones, assistant cashier
found the inan hiding behind fix-
tures when he opened the bank
The robbei menaced Jones with a
pistol and told him to open the
vault.
As Jones fumbled with the com
liinntlnn. his brother. H. F. Jones
head bookkeeper, entered the door
He railed and the robber fired a!
him.
Jones ducked and the gunman
raced toward him. C. V. Jones
snatched a pistol nnd shot six
limes at tire intruder.
Turning to meet tiis new threat
the intruder emptied his pistol
then Jumped from the rear win-1
dow and fled in an automobile
parked there.
Citizen Pursues Robber
W. L. Henry, a citizen, was pass-1
ing in Ills car which contained a
rifle. He pursued the robber, fir-
ing. but was unable to score a hit
from the swaying vehicle.
Henrv chased the gunman into
n blind lane about a mile and a
half from town, then notified
8heriff Edwards the robber was
trapped.
Edwards and Henry met the
gunman returning from the end
of the lane. The man surrendered
without resistance.
The prisoner identified himself
as H. L. Myers, furloughed Texas
convict.

Celebration
Bob Stevenson. 18, an imperson-
ator and skate dancer who lives
in the 400 block of 3outh Ba’-ker
avenue, was the winner of first
place in the amateur contest con-
ducted here Thursday night as
a feature of the annual fall open-
ing festival sponsored by the Re-
tail Merchants association. A cash
prize of *10 was awarded him.
Second prize of *750 was receiv-
ed bv pupils of the Rock Island
I school who presented a skit. “Hill
Billy Wedding." Third award of
S5 was claimed by Jack Riley. 7

song and dance.
Marsh Presides
A large number of entries was
attracted by the event, at which
Walter P Marsh, highschool prin-
[ cipal presided as master of cer-
emonies. In addition to the three
winners, other contestants and
their entertainment features were
as follows:

—The homestead tax exemption
problem, probablv the moat ex-
plosive issue facing the legislature,
today appeared to be headed into
a labyrinth of tangles after Rep-
resentative F N. Shoemake, Mus-
kogee. charged that a group of
senators were banded together
against vitalizing the amendment.
Shoemake. a right-hand bower of
Governor E. W Mar land, predict-
ed a special session would be called
about Nov. 23 to vitalize the
amendment which was voted a
year ago yesterday.
